Mr. Gay Philly Crowns Its First Transgender Winner

lou-cutler-mr-gay-philadelphia33-year-old Lou Cutler wasn’t looking to make history when he entered the Mr. Gay Philadelphia contest, but when he got the crown he became the first transgender winner in the history of the contest.

GPhilly was on the scene at the competition, and reporter Josh Middleton managed to get some truly inspiring words from Cutler:

“It’s kind of hard to be a gay trans man sometimes…But I’m very proud of who I am, and I’ve worked very hard to become who I am. This, in some sense, is a dream come true for me. To be able to be part of this community, and also represent my own community—and to just be visible. It’s important for me to be out and visible as gay and trans, to show the community that not every trans person is the same.”

Kudos to Mr. Cutler, and right on to the voters for Mr. Gay Philadelphia.

In what has been a groundbreaking few years for transgender visibility, trans men definitely need more exposure, and this is definitely one way to do it.

We’re looking forward to seeing more stories about trans men in the future.
