You may not be aware of this, but a lot of gay people are involved in the arts.
For example! Gay Mormon reality show contestant Tyler Robinson, who set our hearts aflame by coming out to his dad on national TV. And then there’s Of Montreal’s Kevin Barnes, who looks cute in a pink coat.
What do these two artists have in common, side from a mutual interest in music and men? Well, they were both gay-interviewed this week, and shared their thoughts on singing and artistry and the nature of their industries. I don’t know… I think that’s just Kevin Barnes. I met him (too funny- also in an alley, and he was wearing that jacket) late last year, and while he is incredibly sweet, he’s extremely shy and inaccessible.

Unless I’ve missed some big announcement on his part, Kevin Barnes is not gay. Heteroflexible maybe, and 100% awesome, but not gay.

The album “Skeletal Lamping” is not autobiographical at all!! It’s a concept album about Barnes’ forty-something year old black trans man alter-ego known as Georgie Fruit, and it holds the majority of its narrative in his favour. There are some pieces that reflect on his personal life (“An Eluardian Instance” is about how he met his wife, Nina), but the majority are meant to be written from Georgie’s perspective.
Kevin has stated in interviews that he is very supportive of LGBT rights and has been fond of championing against gender binary, but he openly straight and just very secure in his sexuality. So not queer at all (this is coming from a bisexual), but yeah, a very “heteroflexible” man – announcing someone who has openly stated that they are not physically/sexually attracted to men as queer seems a bit appropriative and disrespectful. And straight people, no matter how open-minded they are, cannot be “queer” or fall under the umbrella – they are still straight!
