Iain Dale, a presenter on London’s LBC radio station, was left “disgusted” on Wednesday by an antigay rant from a Muslim caller.
To help promote acceptance between the LGBTQ and Muslim communities, activist Sohail Ahmed mounted a campaign stall outside the Whitechapel station in London; a project in collaboration with The Peter Tatchell Foundation, which seeks to raise awareness of human rights in the U.K. and worldwide.
When a Muslim woman — “Zainab from East London” — called the radio station, her incendiary comments left Iain reeling: she compared homosexuality to pedophilia and claimed that homosexuality should be punishable by death.
“If people want to be gay,” she said, “go ahead and be gay, don’t get my religion involved in it and try and twist my religion and say ‘yeah we’re Muslim and gay’, just say you’re gay, why do you have you say you’re Muslim and gay?”

Responding to questions as to why gay people shouldn’t and couldn’t also be Muslim, she responded, “If they had religious views that were sincere, they wouldn’t be gay, because they would know it’s an abomination.”
Iain decided to ask her what she thought about ISIS, who throw gay men (and men assumed to be gay) off buildings to their death.
Her answer? “My religion is very clear what happens to gay people … I believe the Quran is the word of god and it hasn’t been changed like The Bible.”
At that point, Iain abruptly (and wisely) ended the conversation, leading Sohail to say, “I’m very ambivalent when I hear these discussions… because just a few years ago, I would have agreed with everything that young lady said. Even though I’m gay myself, I held those exact same views. It may sound strange but I understand where she’s coming from. Unfortunately, she’s still wrong.”

It seems to escape these individuals that if homosexuality were actually a choice there would be no such thing as homosexuals especially in muslim majority countries where the environment is frequently so virulent for us. This is a lie mulsims and christians frequently must tell themselves otherwise their “loving” deity is making people gay or allowing them to be born that way then sentencing them to death… something inconsistent with most theists conceptions of a loving god ergo queers “choose” their sexuality.

I would say however that gay people are not afraid of Muslims, given that many gay people ARE Muslims. I would say gay people and straight allies do not like to think about having to resort to retaliation to end human rights violations against LGBTA people. After all, LGBTA people outnumber all the politicians and religious leaders combined on the planet by a vast amount. And LGBTA people have access to everything – all professions, scientific knowledge, every tool, etc. There isn’t any real obstacle other than the natural civility of LGBTA people. It’s not much different than the first women’s rights convention when the men and women agreed the largest obstacle to rights for women was convincing women (who were raised to think they were inferior) that they indeed deserved equality and respect and should therefore not tolerate being treated less than equal.

As you know, the LGBT & Allied community has proven it has its limits on civility when encountering discrimination – Stonewall, for example, and the White Night Riots (as two events directly connected to injustice towards the LGBTA community). It’s pretty telling that Stonewall is hailed as a milestone celebrated year after year – a reminder that when push comes to shove the LGBTA community is not above shedding civility. I would also say that there is no press coverage when LGBTA people get revenge for wrongs since those who harm LGBT & Allied people do not know when it is LGBTA people who achieve retribution. They don’t even know when a region decays or is destroyed by something unrelated directly to LGBTA issues – whether such was wrought by LGBTA people since LGBTA people are not limited to just one avenue of response to atrocities against LGBTA people. And LGBTA people raised in any region where you must literally fight to survive, no matter who you are, have a different set of skills than those raised in less trying circumstances. A young person forced to have the mindset of a soldier is a soldier regardless of whether they are LGBTA or not. I think the reason regions need to stop harming LGBTA people is because LGBTA people have no reason to go along with it at all or to refrain from responding as needed. LGBTA people are just like everyone else after all.
