New Captain Kirk?

mikevogelh.jpg
JJ Abrams may or may not have cast Mike Vogel as Captain Kirk in the forthcoming Star Trek big screen adventure. Says IESB:

After months of speculation, industry chatter is indicating that JJ Abrams has found a front runner for his new James T. Kirk.

We have been hearing his name for weeks but in the last couple of days the rumor has picked up steam with tips from several inside sources. The IESB has been told that 28-year-old Pennsylvania native Mike Vogel (Poseidon, Texas Chainsaw Massacre) is the front runner to play James T. Kirk in the 11th Star Trek film.

Mikey can beam us up any day, whatever that means.

Why not? he’s hot as hell, and he is in J.J.Abram’s untitled movie project/Cloverfield/monster movie/Japanese robot drink thing (they are in post-production)…

Damn. For a while there it looked like they were trying to get Matt Damon. That must be a dead hope now if they’re floating no-names.

I’m still cautiously optomistic about this film, but it could really an *exciting* cast announcement at this point if they really want the public to care about rebooting this franchise.

There were long rumors that Matt Damon would do it. Damon said it wasn’t true that it was agreed upon, but with a good script he’d be open to it.

They should have made a damn good script because Damon would have been the *perfect* Kirk. And, adamblast is right, it would be the perfect thing for publicity to get Matt Damon to do it. If anyone has good taste in film roles (at least since a series of unremarkable ones in the late 90s/early 2000s), Damon is it. And the public knows it.

I read about this yesterday and thought, now there’s a pretty.

The problem is that Matt Damon would have been WAY too old for the part. Kirk was supposed to have been the youngest officer ever to have made Captain up that point. But Matt Damon is older now than William Shatner was when he first appeared in Star Trek back in 1966, and this is supposed to take place earlier in Kirk’s life. It wouldn’t have worked.

Oh, and I think it’s better to go with unknowns, that way, no-one has preconceptions of an actor’s abilities. All the first four series were cast with relative unknowns at the time (at least to US TV audiences), but look what happened when they put a “name” in the captain’s chair for Enterprise. The show sucked.

Mike Vogel isn’t going to be an unknown after the J.J. Abrams monster movie comes out.

and Zachary Quinto is certainly not an unknown (at least not anymore)

oh, definitely. if they did it before, they’ll go wild with those two. especially since i think Quinto’s family anyway.
