New Life…

“The Ocean Drive mansion where Gianni Versace was gunned down on the front steps in 1997 now features a 120-seat restaurant. Telecom gazillionaire Peter Loftin, who paid $19 million for the property, opened Loftin’s 1116 Ocean last weekend…” [NY Post]

We care about this building because it’s a South Beach landmark. Versace’s decision to build his mansion on Ocean Drive helped in the revitalization of an area that was in desparate need of repair, which has now become a world class destination. Versace did alot for South Beach by building that house, and it was a landmark even before tourists started taking pictures of the steps where he was killed.

The mansion was already built when Versace bought it. The building was called Amsterdam Palace Apts. and it was a rental property that Versace bought and renovated. The building has been there since before 1980 and was in need of repairs.

Who wants to have dinner somewhere someone died right under their feet… does anyone else think this is the least bit morbid?

“Who wants to have dinner somewhere someone died right under their feet”

I suppose if we abandoned every building there is because someone died there then we would have lots of vacant lots in the world. You have probably done lots of things in buildings where people have died, just in this case you know somebody did because they were famous and the incident received an immense amount of press.

Exactly, Michael, well said. However, the whole thing just seems more than a little…tacky.
