News Crew Casually Films Police Beating Trans Woman, Identifies Her As “Tranny”

honduras-news-trangenderA Honduran news channel has released original footage of an unidentified man and an alleged military police officer violently assaulting a transgender woman while others stand by, offering a sobering reminder of how nonexistent LGBT rights are in some countries abroad.

Local source La Prensa, which describes the victim as “the tranny,” claims the woman is a sex worker. She reportedly attracted the attention of police and the Channel 6 news crew when an altercation with a client became disruptive — she reportedly broke the window of his truck when he refused to pay for her services.

The video begins after two military police officers arrive at the scene. The deadbeat client can be seen kicking, punching, and throwing the woman to the ground as two military police officers look on. At one point during the video, one of the officers — in full military gear — can be seen kicking the victim and pushing her down the street.

Antonio Sanchez, spokesman for the Armed Forces of Honduras, has denied any officer involvement in the altercation, even though there is clear video evidence suggesting otherwise. “The video was manipulated,” he claims.

It’s not clear what the outcome of the immediate altercation was.

La Presna notes that the footage surfaces just a week after Honduran LGBTs marched on the capital to demand legislative protection against hate crimes. According to it, more than 168 LGBTs have been killed in the country since 2009, 34 of which happened so far in 2014.
