Big news in little fag rag land.
New York-based weekly Next found a new editor following Justin Ocean’s travel over to The Out Traveler. Former Washington Blade journo Brian Moylan will take the reigns next week. Associate Publisher Jeff Woodward had the following to say:
Next is proud to announce that Brian Moylan, a six-year veteran of The Washington Blade, has accepted the vacant–and much sought after–editor-in-chief position here at Next Magazine, New York’s Gay Guide. Following a powerhouse year that brought Next to new heights, existing editor Justin Ocean guided the redesign of our 14-year-old bar rag into a magazine for the masses, featuring a slicker look, style and feel and a new more inclusive and diverse outlook on the ever-changing New York gay community. Justin credits synergy between creative director Topher Ellsworth and associate art director Charlie Piazza as the visual masterminds behind the redesign and editor Benjamin Solomon as key to keeping the ideas fresh, creative and more relevant than ever.
…While Justin leaves behind some big shoes to fill, we are confident Brian can continue the newfound focus, energy and excitement of the past year and take it even further. With his extensive years working in gay publications and fresh outlook on the city, it’s an honor to welcome Brian to Next…
Moylan kept his statement more concise:
I’m thrilled to be working again full time in gay media and I couldn’t pick a better publication than Next. Ocean and his team have really made the magazine into New York’s best gay publication, and I’m looking forward to taking up the mantle and making it even better.
We hope he can handle the New York City’s “extreme personalities”.

Next magazine is for tourists and the poor yet coveted 18-22yo demographic and those who like twinks (usually editors and CEOs). New York is actually a senior city with over one-third the population in the Gray Gardens category. HX, oops Next Mag sadly promotes the two most boring things about New York gay Nightlife: Drag Queens and Go-Gos. Only in America are we prevented from talking to each other while a straight or homo hustlin crystaled-out Go-Go sorta-dancer gyrates their flaccid penis for dollars (ever since Bush cut Medicaid funded Viagra)or Drag Queens who are sometimes funny for the first minute and a failed gay stand-up for the remaining torture and it costs way more than the minimum 2 drink minimum to sit through “tits-and-a-dick” vaudeville. Imagine a bar with drink specials, a computer cafe, real cruising, multiplicity of ethnicities and ages and no hustlers and drag queens. Honolulu has most of that and all we have is a “Rip off the Euro-trash gnashing of the teeth, I have to move to the outer-boroughs to afford New York, I work-out because there’s no work, I hate myself but will take it out on you” Death of Chelsea (not the Clintons) huge problem in the downward spiral of sexually uninhibited gay bars and post-stonewall liberation. We deserve better. Oh, Next!

There are some good things about this blog, but I hate how it uses words like “fag.” It is rather offensive to those of us who aren’t into the “radical queer” mindset. The blog tends to embrace archaic stereotypes instead of fight them.
