Nigerian Actor Bestwood Chukwuemeka Jailed For Homosexual Encounter

Nigerian actor Bestwood Chukwuemeka has been sentenced to three months in jail for “unnatural offence” because of a sexual encounter with another man.

As Nigerian Entertainment Today reports, the 28-year-old thespian pleaded guilty on Moday but begged the court for mercy. When initially arrested he plead innocent, saying he had been drinking and couldn’t distinguish between his girlfriend and the man who was actually in his bed. “I came back drunk from the night club and thought I was sleeping on the same bed with my girl-friend—and I started romancing her,” he stated at his arraignment.

Judge Nafisatu Buba was having none of it: She said Chukweumeka would be an example for others “who hide under the influence of alcohol to commit crimes.” Bail was set at 200,000 naira (approximately $1,300).

This week at his second hearing, however, Chukwueka entered a guilty plea and was immediately sentenced.

Though arrests for “unnatural offences” are rare in Nigeria, the country’s has seen a backlash against the LGBT community: Last year Nigeria’s Senate approved a bill that would outlaw same-sex marriage and ban public displays of affection between gay couples. And as we recently reported popular comic actor John Okafor recently claimed homosexuality is “killing” Nollywood, Nigeria’s version of Hollywood.

With Chukwuemeka’s reputation and career in tatters, Okafor must sleep better at night.
