No Southern Hospitality

States like California & New York may be embracing gay marriage, but it’s still a fantasy in the south. Lauren Martin, 17, and Chelsea Overstreet, 18, are high school sweethearts in Alabama that have exchanged promise rings in front of their families. “If I could get married tomorrow, I would,” Overstreet says. In Alabama, a stunning 87% are against gay marriage and 53% oppose equal rights for gays. This is exactly why states like Alabama need more laws on the books protecting gays – the scary majority.

What I want to know is, who are the 13%, and how can we get them to reproduce faster than the other people?

I am a recovering southerner, I have been clean and sober for 4 years now that I live in Vancouver. I lived in Nashville, which is actually one of the “better” areas of the south. But let me tell you
they are still fighting the civil war down there so do not think that
unless there is another one that you will see any real progress there. Sometimes I think we should start an underground railroad
just to emancipate our gay brothers and sisters from the place.
Its a very backward society.

I still live in the South. Atlanta is something of a gay oasis in a vast Christian fundamentalist desert. It is no accident that the states with the strongest homophobia are generally states with the lowest educational standards and the most rigidly conservative Republican politicians. Jesse Helms was no freak of nature in the South.

Having grown up in Alabama, with relatives in Mississippi, Georgia, and Florida, I can say assuredly that Alabama is NOT the most backward state in the country. My partner of 12 years and I could adopt a baby in Alabama but cannot as we live in Florida. Despite the retarded populous, Alabama actually has more civil rights and protections for lgbt community than Florida does–tough still woefully inadequate.
