Now This Is What We Had In Mind for an Oscar Wilde Movie

The Picture of Dorian Gray, the only novel Oscar Wilde ever published, has been remade as many things. A novel. A dance. And now, a film. Coming to the U.S. next year, Oliver Parker’s Dorian Gray stars the devilishly handsome Ben Barnes as Gray, a touch obsessed with beauty and youth. And, in this just-released scene from the film (which debuted in the U.K. in September), kisses and blowjobs with the artist who sends him down his spiral. (A Single Man‘s Colin Firth co-stars.)

While I have sadly given up on my dream of seeing Jude Law playing Dorian this looks like a worthy substitute. Certainly better than the pseudo-Dorian of “Pact With The Devil” played by the admittedly hot but acting-impaired Ethan Erickson: http://img2.timeinc.net/ew/img.....reaker.jpg

And prettier than the wax carving formerly known as Hurd Hatfield: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wi.....ropped.jpg

Unfortunately that is the “gayest” scene in the movie. Actually other than that the movie is all hetro with Dorian shagging his way through every woman and only women in London.

I’ve seen it. It really isn’t that gay at all. As usual the straights have whitewashed any gayness until it is almost irreconciliable with any real emotion that might ever exist between two men as they can’t tolerate it any other way. My advice- don’t expect much. I would personally only bother to see the thing at all if you are a fan of Ben Barnes who by the way is absolutely delectable in it.

Ah, but imagine the Jude of yesteryear, say of “Wilde” vintage or even “Ripley” vintage playing it…

Beck R: It really isn’t that gay at all. As usual the straights have whitewashed any gayness until it is almost irreconciliable with any real emotion that might ever exist between two men as they can’t tolerate it any other way.

But the novel was never about any emotions existing between two men, other than bitchiness and unrequited lust. Dorian is the uncorrupted man-child whose innocence Basil seeks to capture in his painting and Lord Henry endeavors to destroy. Henry comes off as a fey dandy and Basil a repressed mess. The scene here works very well. Dorian isn’t interested in connecting with Basil on any emotional level. He’s acting as trade to get Basil off the track of wanting the painting back. That’s why the second kiss is awkward (the first is pretty hot). Trade doesn’t kiss. Trade puts the queer on his knees and gets serviced.

Not to condone anything illegal, no never, but the whole film is available thru the usual easy unofficial sources.

I saw it at the Toronto Film Festival in September. It’s dreadful. Not even worth renting. I’m surprised someone bought it to release it.

FakeName got it right; Dorian’s obsession with youth and beauty seems to lead him to a Faustian path with Basil and Lord Harry merely as thematically opposed foils.

IMHO the best teleplay version of this was the 1976 made for TV BBC broadcast with Jeremy Brett, Peter Firth (no relation to Colin) and John Gielgud.

Maybe the whole story could be made into a great exploitation franchise by expanding on the innuendo of Dorian’s decadence; gambling, womanizing, misogyny, homosexuality, blackmail, murder. Maybe James Wan and Eli Roth can get together with ChiChi LaRue and Michael Crichton and come up with something (un)suitable.

a lot of actors wouldn’t have done this.plus his friend is supposed to looked surprised..not forced at all..but a newfound respect for Ben for taking on this role should be the real response..not typical gay hatred for being gay…
