Does Sen. Ruben Diaz, the anti-gay New York state senator who uses his 32nd majority-making vote to draw blood, have his fist up the asses of all Democrats in Albany? The spineless lawmakers, who consistently refuse to enact LGBT legislation (minus this month’s anti-bullying bill), gave in to Diaz’s “fit” over letting same-sex couples who married legally in another state file joint tax returns. Offered Senate Democratic Conference Leader John Sampson on Monday night: “That issue will be dealt with to ensure that Reverend Diaz is comfortable.” Yes, we wouldn’t want to do anything to upset the good reverend.

This guy is an unbelieveable asshat, and no true Democrat. Unfortunately, he’s largely untouchable in his district. The party should cease endorsing him and try to run a challenger, but a more effective strategy would probably be to pick off other Republican seats and thereby render Diaz irrelevant.

I’m not the type of person who would normally act in such a manner, but if I ever see this asshole, I’m spitting right in his fucking face. And I think I’d do the same to all the chickenshits that keep cowering instead of doing what they KNOW is the right thing to dobecause they’re afraid of getting ousted during their next election.

There’s no doubt that Sen. Diaz needs to go. But I do take issue with this article’s characterization of legislators as “spineless.” The Democratic majority in the NYS Senate is razor thin, leaving individual members of the Senate Democratic conference with enormous power. Sen. Diaz is taking advantage of this power and using it to advance his hateful, homophobic agenda. As painful as it was to see these protections stripped from the legislation, the alternative would have awful. Since this provision was tied to a budget bill, the failure of its passage would have been disastrous for the state. It’s not that the legislators are spineless, they are helpless! Here’s the bottom line: As long as Sen. Diaz remains in office and as long as the Democratic majority in the NYS remains tenuous, the prospects for LGBT legislation in this state are grim.
Diaz is not untouchable in his reelection bid. He’s got a pro-marriage equality primary opponent, Charlie Ramos. Donate to his campaign to get this guy out of office.

Hey, why can’t Malcolm Smith and Shelly Silver work with the GOP? It’s not like there aren’t allies on the right in the State Senate and State Assembly. If Smith and Silver weren’t so partisan, they could get a few Republicans from moderate to liberal districts, e.g. Scozzafava-esque Republicans, and render Diaz and crew absolutely irrelevant.
Brutus
Because the GOP has fabulous party control, unlike the Dems.

What happened to senate leaders who use to keep their senators under control? It use to be, if you didn’t toe the party line, you were severly punished. Now you get your back up, and entire bills are changed–or scrapped–just to keep one douchebag happy. The senators aren’t spineless, their leader is.
