We're absolutely astonished this morning. The mainstream media – namely: the New York Times – has turned its attention to the plight of gay Iraqis. Here's but a taste of Cara Buckley's piece:
…Until recently, Mohammed and many of his gay friends went one step further, slipping into lovers’ houses late at night. And, until the American invasion, they said, Iraqi society had quietly accepted them.
But being openly gay is not an option in the new Iraq, where the rise of religious extremism has left Mohammed and his gay friends feeling especially vilified.
Wait, the American-led invasion didn't bring peace and queer prosperity? Preposterous!

not for nothing, but I think if you're gay and living in Iraq right now this is the least of your concerns. I'd be more worried about getting killed in a bombing or crossfire than about whether or not I could slip into my lover's house late at night.
It takes awhile for the New York Times to get it. They supported the ‘incursion’ into Vietnam. Several millions deaths later it finally dawned on them that they’d been had by Democrat LBJ. The NYT, like the Democrats in Congress, fell for his absurd story about the maniacal Vietnamese high seas fleet (half a dozen obsolete river gunboats) that sallied out into open seas in a dastardly attack on the helpless US 7th fleet, then serenely fishing in the Gulf of Tonkin.
Fast forward forty odd years. The New York Times supported the Clinton/Bush invasion of Iraq. Again, hundreds of thousands of deaths later they’ discovered’ that George Bush, and before him Bill Clinton were lying about WMD’s to promote the oil wars.
Now they’ve “found†that the US armed Sunni police and the s Shiite militias routinely hunt down and butcher our Iraqi bothers and sisters. All this is, of course paid for by our tax dollars in a war funded by the Democrats and supported by the Republicans. Doug Ireland has several excellent stories on the situation in his blog and in Gay City News. His stories and the bleated and incomplete NYT stories make liars of people like ‘hell’s kitchen guy’ who deny that hundreds of antigay murders are occurring and who trust blindly in the NY Times.
Is it fair to ask how people can stomach the Democrats who fund these murders, who raped ENDA and ‘misplaced’ the hate crimes bill and gave us DADT and DOMA? The answer is yes, and more and more of us will be asking the question.
