“Roving hoodlums were out for blood when they bashed in the head of an accountant on a West Village street Thursday, possibly because he was gay, police said. ‘I got him good,’ one of the punks allegedly boasted after the gang jumped Alan Williams, 50, as he was hailing a cab around 2 a.m. Thursday. Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said the NYPD is investigating the near-fatal beating as a ‘possible bias attack.’ Williams was in serious condition in a surgical ICU room at St. Vincent’s Hospital Manhattan Thursday night – his swollen head wrapped in gauze, a tube down his throat. Put into a medically induced coma so his brain can heal, Williams has not been able to speak to police. New York is littered with guns. Why don’t we own any? If somebody had one, they would have fired some shots into the general vacinity of those little pricks, and they would have scattered.
That said, I can see the debate about marriage equlity in NY is bringing out the gay bashers.
Another day, more hate and someone near death for no reason other than hate, where in this country are we safe as gays and lesbians? I have had it up to here with the hate, and, maybe its time to start packing heat to protect ourselves, and, that from someone as anti-gun and violence as you can get, but, these chumps need to be taught a lessons that they didn’t get at home.
My thoughts are with this victim that he gets a good recovery and the cowards caught and proscueted, which they will be as they are always dumb enough to talk about how they beat the gay guy down.
But, not sure what to make of the trasvestite remark, do, they mean transexuals?

Yes, guns. Guns are useful and cool. I don’t know if it would have prevented this, but there’s a good chance that one of the fuckers woulda been terminated in self defense. And that’s a service to the community.
As I have always maintained, NY is the most bigotted state in the Union. Violence is exalted in that state and has been since its begining.
And yet the NYPD seems to have limitless resources to troll Gay book stores and entrap innocent, middle-aged gay men. Doesn’t leave much “man” power left for real crime fighting I suppose.

The solution to cops not doing their jobs is to bring back the wild west?
We’ve been through this little discussion before, and I don’t have time for a repeat, but I know your country is unique in the developed world in that you have a strong lobby that thinks more guns equals less violence – and anyone who dares to argue against handguns is a traitor.
It’s your country and you can do what you want (though the flow of illegal guns over our border sure has an impact on us).
…but I am sure some of the people arguing for more guns have no idea how to use one, have probably never experienced gun violence up close, and haven’t thought through the logistics of discharging a firearm on a city street (or possibly having their guns taken away and used against them).
What happened to this fellow is a terrible tragedy. Before you start parading him as a poster boy for the NRA it might be polite to wait until he gets out of his coma and see how he feels about the issue.

The issue of self defense patrols has come up a few times as a way to deal with cops not doing their jobs. A lot of universities and other communities already organize their own security.
THAT is a valid response. Assuming that we need the option of deadly force (especially in the hands of people who are angry, untrained in security and perhaps not thinking straight) is not.
And NOBODY should be firing guns in the city, let alone within a mile of a house.
