Obama Nominates Eric Fanning, Openly Gay Man, As Under Secretary Of The Air Force

An openly gay man has been nominated as the next Under Secretary of the Air Force.

Eric Fanning, currently Deputy Under Secretary for the Department of the Navy, has had a long and illustrious career in public service—including time at the House Armed Services Committee, the White House and the Office of the Secretary of Defense.

As Under Secretary for the Air Force, Fanning is responsible for “organizing, training, equipping and providing for the welfare of…more than 333,000 active duty men and women, 178,000 Air National Guard and the Air Force Reserve members, 182,000 civilians, and their families,” according to the Victory Fund.

“I am honored by the President’s announcement,” Fanning said, “and look forward to working with the Congress and continuing to serve the Department of Defense during the confirmation process.”

Below is a video “thanks” Fanning recorded after the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.
