Of Course It’s a Pair of Lesbians Who Become Portugal’s First Married Gays

Portugal’s same-sex marriage law has gone into effect, and Teresa Pires and Helena Paixao, each a divorced mother in her 30s, secured the country’s first license, wedding in a 15-minute ceremony. The gay men slept in. [AP]

      Why the catty comment?

      The happy couple in question is the couple who stood up and fought for marriage-equality taking the cause the Portugal’s Supreme Court a few years ago. Because of their efforts and struggle, Portugal’s leading party took up the cause.

      It is because of their brave efforts that Portugal has legalized marriage-equality. Instead of catty comments “Of course its a pair of lesbians…” Queerty should have celebrated that “Portugal’s first gay marriage activists marry first!”

      For fuck’s sake Queerty, does everything need to be so snarky? Can’t good news just be good news to be celebrated?

      Well, it always seems as if the first couple to marry in a gay marriage situation is female. It’s as if the power-that-be in the GLBT community are giving a shout-out to the “acceptable” – ie female – form of homosexuality instead of the “less acceptable” ie male – form.

      Generally, you see this a lot in the mainstream: females are more socially accepted than males when it comes to homosexuality.

      Keep in mind that female homosexuality is glamorized in the adult literature and movies of men who don’t really give a fuck about our rights as gay people. To these men, female homosexuality is a form of titillation only.

      For goodness sake. This is quite disgusting. Who needs homophobic enemies when we’ve got headlines like this within ‘our’ own ‘community’?! There is an L in LGBT/GLBT you know. This couple, as Mike said, campaigned for marriage equality for ALL gay people, and I think it is only right that they should be the first. To me their gender has nothing to do with it. Celebrate the victory why don’t you!

      I certainly don’t just think of gay women when I talk about equality, and every hateful thing that happens to a gay man or a bisexual person hurts me too. I thought that the gay community was inclusive of everyone under the gay umbrella. This is obviously not the case in some places, and considering the amount of hatred that is still directed at us from the outside, I find it terribly sad that we face it from within too.

      I agree with Mike. What’s with the snarky comment? We should be glad when same-sex couples can get married. And report is as news. GOOD NEWS! Male and female couples. I mean really. Is this Perez Hilton’s Bitchy Gossip Bitchfest Part II? Get it together!

      I can’t believe the pervasive sense of exclusion and misogyny that occurs here. You should be celebrating the marriage of these two women rather than hemming and hawing about how it’s a lesbian couple that’s getting married. I’m deeply ashamed about how this website portrays female sexuality of all forms. LGBTQ covers the entire queer spectrum; not just one or two perspectives. How about embracing people for who they are rather than making it a reason for petty gossip? I think Queerty lost the respect it had as an LGBT blog a while ago anyway. When I get married, I want it to be celebrated, not scoffed at. This place seriously needs better writers who know that equality is for everyone.

      @Jason

      You enrage me. So are you saying that the “G” in LGBTQ is the only one worth mentioning? By saying what you do you’re just persisting the status quo heterosexist vitriol that apparently isn’t unique to just straight men. I AM NOT a form of titillation for any man. I am a human being and my love deserves the same form of respect and protection from marginalization as yours does. The only truthful message you’re comment gets across is self-loathing. You need to learn to accept yourself and everyone else here.
