Off The Hook…

Justice Department staffers who screened prospective hires for political affiliation and, at times, sexual orientation, will not face criminal charges. Said Attorney General Michael Mukasey: In this instance, the two joint reports found only violations of the civil service laws… There was a failure of supervision by senior officials in the department. And there was a failure on the part of some employees to cry foul when they were aware, or should have been aware, of problems." [AP]

This should surprise anybody? This administration has no use for the Constitution, laws, justice, morality, or basic human decency, so why would they be expected to go after the laughably unlawful shenanigans of their boxtop-law-degree employees?

The Bush administration has been unchecked and lawless. My concern is that they have set a precedent for governing that ignores the rights of the minority party that the Democrats will now feel free to follow. And if the lawbreakers are permitted to escape punishment this will make this even more likely. But I expect the voters would not be pleased to think of a Democratic controlled government investigating and punishing the previous administration.

According to Mukasey, "…not every violation of the law is a crime." So, who gets to pick and chose what laws we can wantonly violate without committing a crime? This Justice Department is incredible. Just like this administration: war is peace, freedom is slavery, not every violation of law is a crime, it's like we've gone through the looking glass. I must admit though, Mukasey does look a bit like the White Rabbit. I think the entire country is on drugs. Or maybe should be.

Monica Goodling had a law degree from Pat Robertson's Regent University Law School, yet she claims ignorance of the law. There are several conservative Christian law schools whose goal is to turn out an army of lawyers to take on what they consider to be the left leaning legal organizations like the ACLU and Lambda Legal Defense Fund. Apparently their graduates don't really know the law.

Justice department lawyers are supposed to held to a higher standard. If the determination is that she broke civil law and not criminal law (and therefore does not face jail time), perhaps some of the victims of her actions can sue to be reimbursed for the damage she has done to their careers by her illegal actions. The standards of guilt are lower in civil court. At the very least lets hope Monica Goodling is disbarred.

This is the wors administration in the history of the US. Liars, cheaters, crooks and bullies from the top down. My fantasy is that they are all eventually held accountable and are forced to pay somehow. I doubt, however, that Bush and Cheney will ever be charged with the crimes against humanity for which they should be tried.
