Adapting Pete Dexter’s novel about a 1960s murder case, director Lee Daniels (Precious) delivers a dense picture that plumbs dark, subversive depths.  The film also sees several marquee stars stepping outside their comfort zones, including Matthew McConaughey as a gay masochist, Zac Efron as his little brother, John Cusack as a skeevy death-row inmate and Nicole Kidman as a blowsy convict-chaser. DVD extras include making-of featurettes and interview with the cast and filmmakers.
