THE SCREENING ROOM

ON DVD: “Magic Mike,” “Sunday Bloody Sunday,” And More!

This week looks good for fans of attractive men: Magic Mike features a buffet of Hollywood beefcake in skimpy clothes, while John Schlesinger’s classic Sunday Bloody Sunday gives us a young Murray Head seducing both a man and a woman. There’s also the acclaimed South African drama Beauty, about a closeted husbands obsession with a beautiful young man, and the ’80s cult doc Kamikaze Hearts, about a lesbian couple who work in the porn industry.

It’s that kind of week.

Magic Mike
($35.99 Blu-ray, $28.99 DVD, Warner)

If you haven’t heard of this movie, you were probably in a coma for the past year: Channing Tatum‘s early life as a stripper inspired Steven Soderbergh’s tale of a hunky Chippendales-style dancer (Tatum) with big dreams—ones that include the sister of his club’s newest asset, the Kid (Alex Pettyfer of Beastly).  If Pettyfer and Tatum don’t melt your butter, there’s also Joe Manganiello, Matt Bomer and Matthew McConaughey to get you going. Extras include a brief behind-the-scenes featurette, a dance reel and a few extended, ahem, sequences.

NEXT: Lust becomes obsession in Beauty

Beauty
($19.99 DVD, TLA)

Francois (Deon Lutz), a fortysomething man in South Africa, loves his wife and children, even if he does run off to hook up with other guys.  Just when life seems to bring no joy, Francois, an unabashed racist and homophobe, meets a young man (Charlie Keegan) and falls madly for him. Soon enough, though, obsession turns to hatred and the possibility of violence.  Set in an upper-class Afrikaans community in picturesque Bloemfontein, Beauty is both intimate and intense.

NEXT: The kisses are his and his and hers in Sunday Bloody Sunday

Sunday Bloody Sunday
($39.99 Blu-ray, $29.99 DVD; Criterion Collection)

This revelatory classic from iconic British filmmaker John Schlesinger (Midnight Cowboy) gets the bravura Criterion treatment 41 years after its theatrical release. In an odd romantic triangle, a young Murray Head juggles liaisons with both Peter Finch and Glenda Jackson. Special features include an audio chat with Schlesinger, interviews with Head and Schlesinger biographer William J. Mann,  and a booklet with an essay by cultural historian Jay Buruma.

NEXT: Crash and burn in Kamikaze Hearts

Kamikaze Hearts
($19.95 DVD, Water Bearer Films)

Juliet Bashore’s alarming documentary all but disappeared from public view after it was released 1986, but is now out on DVD. Focusing on porn-star lovers Sharon “Mitch” Mitchell and Tigr, Kamikaze Hearts delves into how being a sex worker can mutate the personal lives of those involved.
