THE SCREENING ROOM

ON DVD: “Our Lips Are Sealed,” “Battleship” “Revenge: Season One,” And More!

The end of summer 2012 brings us a diverse harvest in home entertainment, from Hollywood blockbusters to American indies: Nate & Margaret chronicles the unlikely friendship between a 52-year-old woman and bright-eyed gay teen (above). The documentary Our Lips Are Sealed follows two queer boys’ effort to make the Guinness Book of World Records for Longest Kiss. Having pretty much nada to do with the game it springs from, Battleship is an effects-filled popcorn flick. And conniving queers and rich people round out the first-season DVD set of TV’s soapy Revenge.

Nate & Margaret

($24.99 DVD, QC Cinema)

Drawing partly from his own experiences as a college student, director Nathan Adloff makes his prizewinning feature debut with this tender Harold and Maude-esque story about 19-year-old gay virgin Nate and 52-year-old spinster comic Margaret. When Nate becomes involved with what could be his first boyfriend, their unlikely friendship threatens to unravel. The DVD offers a behind-the-scenes featurette, deleted scenes, audition tapes, commentaries and Adloff’s 2008 short film, “Untied Strangers.”

Our Lips Are Sealed
($24.99 DVD, Shoot the Freak Films)

In 2010, New Jersey college students Matty Dailey and Bobby Canciello announced their intention to break the Guinness World Record for Longest Continuous Kiss. As they locked lips and the hours mounted, hundreds of thousands of viewers went online to watch the pair smooch in real-time. Having played LGBT film festivals around the world, John Gallino’s 50-minute documentary is tense, amusing and insightful. The DVD offers Matty and Bobby’s “It Gets Better” video and a bonus Q&A session taped at Philadelphia’s QFest.

Battleship
($34.98 Blu-ray, $29.98 DVD, Universal)

In the better-than-you-think popcorn flick department, this crazy sci-fi blockbuster “adaptation” of Hasbro’s strategy game sees Rihanna, Taylor Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgaard and Liam Neeson make bank do battle with mysterious aliens. Extras on the Blu-ray include a commentary with director Peter Berg, making-of featurettes and an alternate ending.

Revenge: Season One
($45.99 DVD, ABC Studios)

Set in New York’s posh Hamptons, ABC’s addictive nighttime drama sees young Emily Thorne (Brothers and Sisters‘ Emily VanCamp) attempt to exact vengeance against the rich and beautiful folks who destroyed her father’s life. Blackmail, sex and deceit—and a twisty gay plotline involving a hustler—made this one of TV’s best guilty pleasures last season. The DVD set features a heap of bonuses—deleted scenes, a pilot-episode commentary with VanCamp and series creator Mike Kelley, music videos and a tour of the Hamptons. That should keep you occupied until Season Two kicks off on September 30.
