THE SCREENING ROOM

ON DVD: Sister Act, Sarah Silverman, Evita On Blu-ray, And More!!

This week’s home entertainment slate leans toward the queer-adjacent side rather than full-on gay: Madonna‘s finest film performance, Evita, gets its Blu-ray release after more than 15 years, while Sister Act (above) and Sister Act 2 pull a sister act with a double Blu-ray set.

Featuring two of the least stereotypical gay guys on television, Comedy Central’s The Sarah Silverman Program gets the box-set treatment this week, while Canuck auteur Guy Maddin’s Keyhole serves up noir realness.

UP FIRST: Don’t cry for Evita

Evita: 15th Anniversary Edition Blu-Ray
($25.99 BluRay, Disney)

What a happy coincidence that this 15th anniversary edition of director Alan Parker’s Evita hits now that Madonna’s back big-time with a tour and success of her 2011 directorial effort, W.E., and the stage production has been revived on Broadway starring Ricky Martin. We won’t nitpick and point out that the film is actually from 1996, so it’s, like, 16 years, since Madge is pretty darned fabulous as the Argentinean icon. Extras include a making-of featurette and Madonna’s video for “You Must Love Me.” We do, we do!

NEXT: It’s a nun’s story in Sister Act

Sister Act/Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit
($29.99 3-disc Blu-ray/DVD combo; Touchstone/Walt Disney)

Speaking of Broadway shows, a musical adaptation of this Whoopi Goldberg vehicle pulled into the Great White Way last year, justifying a second look at the original. It’s bundled with Sister Act 2, which we doubt will get the jukebox musical treatment (though you never know). Blu-ray extras aren’t miraculous—mostly include making-of featurettes and some heavenly music videos.

NEXT: Sarah Silverman is the female Daniel Tosh. Discuss

The Sarah Silverman Program: The Complete Series

($49.99 DVD, Shout! Factory)

A delightfully un-PC friend-to-gays, Silverman (who’s the grand marshal at SF Pride this year—how’s that for queer cred?) finally gets some respect with a box-set release of  her acclaimed Comedy Central series featuring all 32 episodes. Brian Posehn and Steve Agee play Silverman’s gay-dork neighbors, with hot-button issues like same-sex marriage, abortion and discrimination regularly get skewered. Plenty of extras here, including commentaries, digital shorts and footage of the cast at 2007’s Comic-Con.

NEXT: Guy Madden gets Greek with Keyhole

Keyhole
(BluRay $34.99, DVD $26.99, Monterey)

Canada’s answer to David Lynch, Guy Maddin, has crafted a dreamy black-and-white noir based on Homer’s The Odyssey, except instead of traveling to the Underworld, the protagonist, Ulysses (Jason Patric), treks through his own house to find his missing wife (Isabella Rossellini). Keyhole is fraught with profound discoveries, ghosts and a whole lot of weird—plus an appearance by queer cult fave Udo Kier.
