After allegedly shooting and killing his girlfriend last week, paralympic runner Oscar Pistorius has been dropped from South Africa’s “It Gets Better” campaign.
Th campaign, headed by postgraduate student Andrew Barry and modeled after the American version created by Dan Savage, is to be launched on February 20 at the Cape Town Holocaust Centre.
In his video, which will no longer be included in the campaign, Pistorius said, “Just remember that you’re special. You don’t have to worry. You don’t have to change. Take a deep breath and remember ‘It will get better’.”
The 26-year-old will face a pre-mediated murder charge — the most serious under South African law — in the death of his girlfriend, 29-year-old model Reeva Steenkamp.

Pistoius claims her death was accidental, having shot her three times though a locked bathroom door, mistaking her for an intruder. Steenkamp’s funeral is today, where hundreds are expected to attend.

I wouldn’t point fingers. Unless you are a South African (as I am), it is difficult to understand the level of tension people live under as a result of the extremely high level of senseless deadly crime, which has touched pretty much every single family multiple times. It is common for even unresisting and cooperating victims to be killed by thieves for a wallet. Why? Just because. For this reason, it is not uncommon for family members or friends to be accidentally shot by people trying to defend themselves after being mistaken for intruders.
