How to Become a Gay Man

When I came out at age 20, while I was in college, I remember being really scared. Scared that my family and straight friends would reject me. Worried that I\'d never find a place in the gay community, whatever that really was. One of the first things I did was join a local gay softball team. (Okay, there were a few very cool straight dudes.) My trepidation immediately turned to pure joy in finding this amazing group of guys, with whom there was a kind of intimacy I\'d never felt before because I was always hiding part of myself. It wasn\'t just on the playing field. After the games we\'d head to the bars, where we\'d drink and cruise and share our hopes and dreams. The older guys looked out for the young ones. Romances happened (and were quickly lost), life long friendships were formed. Best of all, what had felt like a dark place in my life became a sources of pride and strength. Thanks, guys.
