OUT NOW: Limelight, Sister Mary, Lesbian Vampires, And More!

Club kids and vampires and killer nuns, oh my! It’s a pretty campy week in home entertainment—from a look at 1980s New York’s freaky nightlife scene in Limelight and  gay-straight cop team tasked to stop a killer nun in Sister Mary, to lesbian vampires and their hunters in The Shiver of the Vampires. Plus, a not-so-campy film about sex trafficking.

FIRST:  Limelight, the house that Peter Gatien built

Limelight

($26.99 DVD, Magnolia)

Club owner Peter Gatien helped define NYC’s nightlife during the 1980s-90s with way queer super clubs like Limelight, Tunnel, Club USA and Palladium. Shockingly, rampant drug use and all sorts of cray-cray got ‘em shuttered—and Gatien’s ass deported to Canada. In this documentary, the eyepatch-wearing impresario reflects on the era and all the fun we missed—or can’t remember.

NEXT: It’s a cornucopia of campy co-stars in Sister Mary

Sister Mary

($19.99 DVD, Ariztical Entertainment)

Like the 80s flick Partners, Sister Mary partners a homophobic detective (James Vallo) with the poster child for gay stereotypes (Shawn Quinlan) in order to catch a nun serial killer. Plenty of appearances from folks you’ll see perform on gay Pride stages—ANT! Judy Tenuta! Bruce Vilanch!—and let’s not forget the omnipresent Brent Corrigan. As for the film itself? Let’s just say it’s not an Oscar contender.

NEXT: Rachel Weisz pulls the plug on sexual slavery in The Whistleblower

The Whistleblower

($29.99 Blu-Ray, $22.98 DVD, 20th Century Fox)

Rachel Weisz plays Kathy Bolkovac, a Nebraskan police officer who takes a gig as peacekeeper in Bosnia and discovers a sinister network of human trafficking and sex slavery—and an international conspiracy of corrupt “peacekeepers” that enables and profits from it. The scumbags in this film make MegaUpload’s Kim “Dotcom” Schmitz look like Bono.

Extras include “Kathy Bolkovac: The Real Whistleblower,” featuring interviews with the brave woman whose story inspired the film.

NEXT: It’s girl-on-girl gore in The Shiver of the Vampires

The Shiver of the Vampires

($24.95 Blu-Ray, Redemption Films)

French horror filmmaker Jean Rollin loved him some lesbian vampires. Heck, who doesn’t? Five of his works have been freshly transferred in high-definition and hit the streets/tombs this week, including this one about a honeymooning couple that ends up at an ancestor’s castle filled with… can you guess?

Extras include an introduction from Rollin himself. Eat that, Bella!
