Out Now: Margaret Cho, Super 8, The Green, Drag Race, And More

Jason Butler Harner and Cheyenne Jackson in The Green

The holiday season is here: The perfect time to slip away from the family with a few new DVDs. Embracing the spirit of Thanksgiving, we’re thankful for this week’s new DVD releases—from a steaming hot Margaret Cho concert film and a fresh serving of suburban intolerance to a yummy documentary about the 1960s gay play (and film adaptation) that changed everything. Plus, a heaping side order of aliens, courtesy of chef J.J. Abrams!

UP FIRST: There’s Aliens among us in Super 8!

Super 8

($44.99 Blu-Ray/DVD Combo, Paramount)

Go back to nostalgic E.T.-era blockbuster territory, with Lost‘s J.J. Abrams as director and Spielberg himself in the producer seat. This entertaining tale of adolescent film nerds who become embroiled in an alien conspiracy recalls elements of Stand By Me, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and other genre greats. Featurettes, deleted scenes and commentaries help fill out two-plus hours worth of extras.

Now how about getting to work on that Star Trek sequel, JJ?

NEXT: The girls tuck and pluck on RuPaul’s Drag Race!

RuPaul’s Drag Race: Seasons 2 &3
($22.49 DVD S:2 /$26.99 DVD S:3, Logo)

If you failed to start your engines during the last two seasons of Drag Race, you can catch all the drama, tiaras, guest judges and mentors (Kathy Griffin! LaToya Jackson! Dita Von Teese! Johnny Weir!) and lip-synching-for-your-life on DVD. And the extras are better than a cocktail in the Interior Illusions lounge: bonus scenes and interviews with the queens, extended reunion moments, and more!

Now go get your parts serviced quick, girl—Season 4 is on the way!

NEXT: Margaret Cho proves she’s the queen of dysfunction with Cho Dependent

Cho Dependent
($14.98 DVD, R
ocket Science)

For those who missed it on the LGBT film fest circuit, Cho’s sixth concert film features saucy takes on current events and her personal life (including her turn on Dancing With the Stars).

No 12-step program will ever wean us off you, Margaret!

NEXT: Behind the Scenes of The Boys in the Band with Making the Boys

Making the Boys
($27.95 DVD, First Run Features)

The story behind the groundbreaking and controversial gay play-turned-movie The Boys in the Band is recounted in this entertaining documentary. Chock full of archival gems—like footage from Boys playwright Mart Crawley’s scrapped Bette Davis’ TV pilot—and insightful interviews, the DVD release also includes deleted scenes and “Relationship Time With Dan Savage,” in which the sex advice guru sounds off on gay monogamy and threeways. Oh Mary, don’t ask!

NEXT: Jason Butler Harner and Cheyenne Jackson prove its not easy being The Green

The Green
($24.95 DVD, Wolfe Video)

With the Penn State scandal still making headlines, this LGBT film-festival favorite is uncomfortably timely. Jason Butler Harner plays Michael, a gay, suburban high-school teacher falsely accused of molesting a student, with supporting turns from Cheyenne Jackson as his loving but increasingly suspicious partner, Julia Ormond as Michael’s defense lawyer and Illeana Douglas as a fellow teacher.
