UP FIRST: It’s Marsden vs. Skarsgard in Straw Dogs

Straw Dogs
($30.99 DVD, $35.99 Blu-Ray; Sony Pictures)

A remake of Sam Peckinpah’s 1971 thriller, Rod Lurie’s version has been updated and altered for contemporary tastes, but still packs plenty of punch. Screenwriter David Sumner (James Marsden) and his wife Amy (Kate Bosworth) move to Amy’s rural hometown of Blackwater, Mississippi, where they encounter her charming and studly ex, Charlie (True Blood‘s Alexander Skarsgard). Apparently dense as concrete, David allows Charlie and his surly crew to repair their new home, setting up a series of events that finds the newlyweds defending their house—and their lives—against a town gone mad. Not exactly a good housewarming gift, but the film does offer ample scenes of Skarsgard looking good enough to eat.

NEXT: And you thought your family was Shameless!

Shameless: The Complete First Season
($39.99 DVD, $49.99 Blu-Ray;  Showtime)

Showtime’s version of the UK series about a poor white-trash clan–including deadbeat dad Frank (William H. Macy), responsible daughter Fiona (Emmy Rossum)and horny gay teen Ian (ginger cutie Cameron Monaghan)—received critical and fan acclaim. Catch Season 1 before Season 2 kicks off on January 4.

NEXT: A troubled teacher gets too close to his favorite student in Crutch.

Crutch: The Director’s Cut
($14.95, Ariztical)

Forced into becoming the man of the house when his father splits, David (Eben Gordon) falls into a bad romance with his drama teacher, Kenny (director Rob Moretti). The new DVD release of this low-fi feature from 2004 includes audio commentary, featurettes/interviews and deleted scenes.

NEXT: Running away doesn’t solve anyone’s problems in The Toilers and the Wayfarers

The Toilers and The Wayfarers
($29.99, Picture This)

This out-of-print black-and-white indie from 1996—about a pair of gay 16-year-olds who flee Minnesota for queerer pastures (and wind up doing some hustling)–comes to a whole new generation via this DVD re-release. It’s like a gift from Gus Van Santa Claus!

NEXT: BoysTown isn’t just a gayborhood in Chicago.

BoysTown: Keeping Secrets

($19.99 DVD, Reidling Entertainment)

Ricky Reidling’s series about assorted twinks living and loving in L.A. returns with a new 35-minute offering. And no, they don’t really keep secrets—or their clothes on.
