OUT ON DVD: Love Never Dies; Loose Cannons, We Need To Talk About Kevin

With this week’s roundup, we welcome VOD—a.k.a. video-on-demand —titles to the party. This week it’s all about families: In Sexual Chronicles of a French Family, a frisky teen and his bisexual brother suddenly find that sex is no longer a taboo topic at home. A dinner-table coming out kicks off laughter and drama in the Italian import Loose Cannons. And Ezra Miller (above) is the creepy son from Hell in We Need to Talk About Kevin.

For theater queens, we’ve got Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom sequel, Love Never Dies, and Ralph Fiennes starring in and directing a modernized version of Shakespeare’s Coriolanus.

Plus, what would the column be without another David De Coteau title? (Leave snarky responses to that question in the comments section!)

After finding a boyfriend and some independence in Rome, young Tommaso returns home to come out and proclaim his intention to abandon the family’s pasta business to become a writer. Unfortunately, his older brother beats him to the punch—unexpectedly coming out first during a family dinner and sending papa to the emergency room. Knowing that his own coming out could be too much for dad’s heart to take, Tommaso instead take over the business and deals with his strong-willed clan. But what to do when his boyfriend and a gaggle of queens arrive unannounced? Gay director Ferzan Özpetek (Steam: The Turkish Bath) brings us a hysterical queer comedy of errors with a poignant and thoughtful side of agita.

When frisky teen Romain is caught playing with himself at school, the resulting discussion at home leads to a new, open approach to sexuality within his household. Pretty soon, Romain’s 21-year-old brother, Pierre, develops a taste for bisexual threeways and even Grandpa has something naughty going down on the side. How do you say “awkward” in French?

Cameras captured Ben Lewis and Anna O’Bryne in the stunning Australian stage production of Andrew Lloyd Weber’s sequel to The Phantom of the Opera, which sees the iconic recluse relocated to New York’s Coney Island. (And the love of his life, Christine, saddled with a degenerate husband and young child.) Extras include a behind-the-scenes featurette about the production.

Schlockmeister David DeCoteau brings us a supernatural Western set in some alternate universe where cowboys wear open vests with no shirts. With only a cursory connection to the real William H. Bonney, this latest endeavor sees the legendary desperado stumble upon a town with a secret—and really cheesy special effects.

Ultrasuede: In Search of Halston

Coriolanus ($29.99 BluRay, $26.98 DVD)
