File this under “things that are super easy to remember never to do”: make obviously racist comments while on live television.
For Univision style host Rodner Figueroa, the lesson was learned the hard way.
Speaking about make-up artist Paolo Ballesteros’ viral transformations into various celebrities, he said of Michelle Obama:
“Mind you, you know that Michelle Obama looks like she’s part of the cast of ‘Planet of the Apes.'”
And the crowd. Went. Silent.
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
It was more Rush Limbaugh than it was Joan Rivers, and that’s never a good thing under any circumstances.
Host Raúl de Molina attempted to save the situation by commenting that Michelle is attractive, but the damage was done.
Univision put out this statement:
Yesterday during our entertainment program “El Gordo y La Flaca” Rodner Figueroa made comments regarding First Lady Michelle Obama that were completely reprehensible and in no way reflect Univision’s values or views. As a result, Mr. Figueroa was immediately terminated.
To his credit, Figueroa wrote a lengthy apology letter to the First Lady, Latino Rebels English translation of which reads:
Respected First Lady Michelle Obama,
I offer my sincere apologies for a comment I made about the characterization from what a makeup artist made about you during my appearance on Univision’s “El Gordo y la Flaca” entertainment program yesterday, and how it was misinterpreted.
I want to clarify that I am not racist in any way and that my comment was never directed towards you, but towards the characterization of that artist, who left much to be desired. The entire video clip in context will prove it.
I feel embarrassed and I apologize, because there is no excuse for a professional like me to make this type of comment, which can be interpreted as offensive and racist duing such volatile times in our country. I take responsibility for this lack of judgment on my part, but I cannot accept being called a racist by anyone and be dismissed because of it, and be publicly humiliated by Univision after 17 years in this business.
I come from a biracial Latino family, with family members like my father who are Afro-Latino. I am the first openly gay presenter on [U.S.] Hispanic TV and I’ve been an activist in favor of causes for minorities, as I have been discriminated against. I voted openly twice for you husband, Barack Obama, because I consider him a great man who respects minorities, like me, in this country.
I worked on two programs for Univision where I commented on the looks of many celebrities, including royalty and Latin American Firt Ladies and I have never offended anyone becuase of their skin color, sexual orientation or nationality. I am a decent person, but a human being after all, and I make mistakes like this. And with the fact that my comment has been interpreted in such an unpleasant and inappropriate (crossing the line) way, I do not deserve to be called a racist, and I have to defend myself out of respect and love for my family, my father, my fans and my community.
I was verbally notified that a complaint made from your office led to my dissmisal and through leaked information initiated from Univision executives, I am now being condemned on social media by those trying to destroy my career unfairly, without even having being notified officially in writing and without an investigation that would clariy the situation.
Again, I offer a humble apology for the misunderstanding and take responsibility.
Very respectfully,
Rodner Figueroa
Sure as hell beats Russell Tovey’s awkward Twitter half-apology.
We actually feel for the guy here — seems like an honest mistake.
Here’s the clip:
Giancarlo85
A very stupid mistake. I never did care much for this guy to be honest… I am not too broken up about him being fired.
Paco
Defending what you have to apologize for, is no apology. What is the first thing a r@cist always says? “I’m not a r@cist.”
Enjoy unemployment.
Xzamilio
“Discriminated against”? Don’t try to throw that card out there now. There was little other way to take what you said, there, buddy…
Now, granted, I think firing him was a bit much, but I’m not losing any sleep over it, and let that be a lesson to anyone else thinking they can make stupid racial or homophobic remarks like that (although I have a feeling the homophobia is less frowned upon)
jimstoic
I don’t get the big deal. He said that a makeup artist who had made himself up to look like Michelle Obama looked more like a Planet-of-the-Apes character. He wasn’t saying that the First Lady herself looked like an ape. He could have been more careful about timing and so forth, but it looks to me as if he made an ambiguous statement that many people interpreted in a way he did not intend.
Giancarlo85
@jimstoic: His statement was in poor taste. But considering what this guy has said about Paulina Rubio and how offensive he often is… This doesn’t surprise me.
He is a douche… And I watch El Gordo Y La Flaca often. He has stuck his foot in his mouth many times.. And this time went too far.
-patioblog-
“If you are gonna be mean, be funny” This wasn’t funny but he was referring to the make-up version. Glad they canned him.
musctop
…Another self-important fool who got a little too big for his Manolos. He referenced a 40 year old movie for ONE REASON. Man up and move on.
Black Pegasus
Now he wants the world to know he’s from a “biracial family” ??
LOL nice try!! Time to go sit your bigoted azz down and draw some unemployment checks. Oh, and you might wanna hire someone to redo your resume.
Bob LaBlah
@Black Pegasus: “Now he wants the world to know he’s from a “biracial family” ??”
This is the first I have heard of him but the longer I look at that photo the more I can see where something else got in there along the line besides a Spaniard. He probably could get together with another (female) of his type and together they could come up with something on the level of Barak Obama, or so I am told by a Puerto Rican I know.
I wanna ask ol’ sister Gian-something-or-other85 if this queen featured in the article is on the same level as Perez Hilton but on second thought I won’t. I guess he too will soon be at the 7-11 lot at 6am. What a fall from grace over a stupid comment.
SteveDenver
I looked that letter and knew an APOLOGY that long was going to be problematic. Right out of the gate he apologizes for being misinterpreted.
What a stupid ass hole.
petensfo
I understand the explanation he offers. To say it shows bad judgement would be the understatement of the century… especially, given his ethnicity.
He must have believed his own press b/c if there ever was a business that would trash you in a second & move on, it would be entertainment.
Good for Univision. They’d have to really screw up for me to forget this decisive, courageous move.
Black Pegasus
@Bob LaBlah: You can see photo of his parents on TMZ ( I tried posting the link but my comment is auto-flagged when posting a link) The queen released a pic of his parents to TMZ. His father Is indeed Afro-Latino. But I’m willing to bet he nor his father EVER identified with anything Black prior to his mishap. But if you read his apology, you’ll see him claiming his Black Card via his father’s heritage, and also claiming he voted for Barack Obama twice lol…So patronizing and desperate in my view
Bob LaBlah
@Black Pegasus: Thank you so much for that link. Daddy no doubt married to please his family. I see a queen in that picture. He is what’s called a mulatto, a mixed race person whom too many think their white till they come over. Those anti-Castro hypocrites down in Miami calling themselves Cubans are the most cynical of them all. I bet many of them curse their black heritages every morning when they look in the mirror.
aliengod
I’m no fan of the Obamas, but his comment was crude and offensive. An apology should have been sufficient. Termination was excessive!
Giancarlo85
@Bob LaBlah: Why are you still trying to pull this crap? I know you are a backwards r,a,c,i,s,t cracker. We get it already. By the way, I work in an office. Keep on insulting me though. At least I am not the one who spends his day jacking off to guys half my age and living off social security.
Giancarlo85
@Bob LaBlah: Bravo on making yourself sound more r,a,c,i,s,t than the Klan. Do you want an award for stupidity?
Desert Boy
Seriously? In 2015? Glad he was fired.
MarionPaige
It’s hard to believe that this guy intentionally meant that The First Lady (herself) looks like something from The Planet of the Apes. His “explanation” about what he meant makes more sense than the alternative (that he could be that dumb).
These talking heads are under a lot of “pressure” to be entertaining (and to be talking) while someone most of the time is yelling stuff in their ears.
It’s like the time This Woman on The Today Show was trying to give the impression that she was so buddybuddy with this comedian and his wife by running off at the mouth about how loving the couple was. Well, she went on and on and one about the guy’s wife oblivious to the fact that the guy’s wife had died almost a year ago.
Blackceo
*sighs* I met Rodner once at a dinner. He is friendly with a college friend of mine from LA (who is Black). I’m certainly not going to say I “know” him, but the conversation we had and the things he said made it quite surprising when I heard that he had made this “Planet of the Apes” comment. He should know better in terms of how ra cist idiots frequently compare Blacks to apes and monkeys, and while I do give him a very slight .01% benefit of the doubt because he did criticize the makeup job of this guy and not the First Lady herself, it was still dumb dumb dumb. Was it racially insensitive? Absolutely. Am I going to label him a ra cist? No.
@Black Pegasus:
“His father Is indeed Afro-Latino. But I’m willing to bet he nor his father EVER identified with anything Black prior to his mishap”
That I agree with. I don’t like the fact that he tried to bring out his Afro-Latino father as some way to try and bring him some Black cred for his remarks. I also agree that he probably had no desire in identifying with the Black side of his family. There are plenty of biracial and mixed race people who want to try and pretend that Black part of them doesn’t exist, and formulate a look, appearance, and lifestyle to do just that. White Latinos are very good at dismissing Afro Latinos. Latina Magazine tried to come for Empire today and asked why there aren’t any Latinos on the show. Well, they BARELY feature Afro Latinos in their publication. It’s usually White Latinos they market so they need to clean up their backyard before coming for Empire.
jason smeds
Well, you’ve got to remember that most gay men build their lives around physical appearance. That’s because their lives are built on the constant pick-up for the length of their lives. With men who marry women, the bond is sealed with the birth of the children and there is no need to keep up one’s physical appearance.
This is why many gay men suffer terribly when they reach a certain age and their looks fade.
Xzamilio
@jason smeds: I’m not even going to lie. I wanted to hate this comment, but honestly, I have to agree… with the exception of the “bond is sealed” garbage… children don’t seal squat. If that were the case, divorce rates wouldn’t be as high as they were.
NJjoe
His idiot remarks sealed the deal in making finding another media job a tough task. No one thinks before they speak anymore. Stupidity at it’s best!
edwardnvirginia
Its good to know that mainstream society sanctions ‘evil gay queen’ behaviors. Hopefully gay people will sanction evil gay queen behavior rather than endorsing it on endless TV shows, movies, and parties, and widespread cultural attitudes and behaviors, including – relentlessly – at Queerty.

I guess one of those “I’m sorry if anyone was offended by my comments” apologies that we usually see from homophobes just didn’t cut it in this case.
-patioblog-
@Kieran, he was referring to FLOTUS so this is prolly considered more disrespectful, but I hear that!
Cam
So is he saying that he was commenting on the make-up artists work by saying that his make-up of Michelle Obama looked like that?
Even if that is true, it seems like a huge mistake for somebody with that much experience, and something that when the audience went quiet an experienced on air personality should have realized it and immediately corrected.
So best case scenario it was very bad on air work, worst case it’s really rac-ist.
And off topic, Queerty, why is the word rac-ist blocked from the posts here even though it has been used in headlines?
Bob LaBlah
@Blackceo: “There are plenty of biracial and mixed race people who want to try and pretend that Black part of them doesn’t exist, and formulate a look, appearance, and lifestyle to do just that. White Latinos are very good at dismissing Afro Latinos.”
I gave a BIG amen to that. How many of you know that a mulatto starred in a top THREE rated television show for YEARS back in the 1950’s and it was not until he DIED that people began to discuss how nothing was ever made of it because of mainly because of his wife? It was Desi Arnaz, you know, as in I Love Lucy. The older Arnaz got the more it became obvious he had an afrocentric blood line. After I read about it every time I look at I Love Lucy (which is just about every other morning on the Hallmark Channel because it IS funny) and see ol’ Desi I see a…………they had a wonderful career.
Giancarlo85
@jason smeds: What does that have to do with this article? Can you stay on topic for once?
Giancarlo85
@Blackceo: Rac,i,sm is a problem in certain Latin American countries too. Take for example, Puerto Rico. There is always tension between white Latinos and black Latinos. This was also an issue in my country Colombia. People get treated differently… And the racial minorities that exist are often not allowed the same opportunity. Even take a look at the politicians… They are mainly white Latino.
However, none of this changes how incredibly stupid Rodner’s statement sounded like. And he is not a stranger in making insensitive comments. He made some ridiculous statements about Paulina Rubio, but I guess that gets a pass by the guys at Univision. Rodner isn’t a guy I would ever want to meet.
petensfo
The more I think about this, the more I wonder if Univision’s decisive action was made easier because they were firing a gay guy.
BJ McFrisky
FLOTUS = FLOTPOTA
Now THAT’S funny.

@Bob LaBlah:
Blah, you’re a piece of work. Too much steam at the L street club has fried your brain. Get outside and get some fresh air. Good grief.
Giancarlo85
@Bauhaus: He doesn’t actually address the topic. He just comes up with off key remarks. He brought up some guy from the 1950s… Lol… Maybe he can bring up all the lynchings that happened in that decade too?
Desert Boy
@jason smeds: What the hell does this remark have to do with saying Michelle Obama looks like she’s from ‘Planet of the Apes’?
Bauhaus
@Giancarlo85:
Trolls don’t address the topic because they can’t win the argument. Much like the Republican Party.
Bob LaBlah
@Giancarlo85: “He doesn’t actually address the topic. He just comes up with off key remarks. He brought up some guy from the 1950s… Lol… Maybe he can bring up all the lynchings that happened in that decade too?”
Excuse me??? Desi Arnaz was in television/interracial and a popular celebrity as was the queen featured in the article. The conversation shifted to afrocentric bloodlines as the queen claimed (and was proven) she had. As for your drug infested, backward country where the damn defense and interior administrators were arrested by my people for taking over the drug trade after the Medellin cartel collapsed to use the expression “ungovernable place” is the understatement of the millennium. Blacks down there are PLENTIFUL but to view ANY news (or what they try to pass off as news) from there, Peru, Bolivia and just about ALL the rest you really would get the impression that not ONE black lives there based on how lily white their video clips are. No clips of black politicians because they are non existent or the ones they do show are security personnel who are wearing suits. They only show blacks when there is a story about crime or prison.
Here, shows such as Empire……well, anyway, enough said.
Univision has improved “somewhat” since they did go out and find this little whore to stick out there and say “look, we found one” and “she” more or less responds back with “yes, and I am nothing to worry about” smiles every time she appears in front of the camera. You know, I honestly am enjoy……………
Giancarlo85
@Bob LaBlah: Again, he doesn’t address the topic. Desi Arnaz has nothing to do with the topic at hand which was about Rodner Figueroa making an incredibly stupid remark. And your nasty comments about my country are absolutely false. The governments of both Uribe and Santos have cracked down on the cartels successfully. You need to keep your stupid moronic and uneducated statements to yourself. You don’t know shit about Colombia and it’s obvious you don’t know much about anything fucktard.
By the way, I bought up Paulina Rubio… I forgot to mention why Rodner was so critical of her. He criticized her for gaining weight during a pregnancy. Yes, this guy is a true douchebag. He has a long history of making insensitive comments, and this time he burned too many bridges.
Giancarlo85
Juan Manuel Santos is backwards is he? He was defense minister, and he took a hardline against cartels and rebels. Yet while a hardliner in matters like that, he voiced his support for same sex marriage. Backwards? I think not. I don’t really have time for this stupid uneducated ass that is stuck in a different decade, especially when he makes completely unsupported and incorrect statements about my country. What a true shitbag.
Bob LaBlah
@Giancarlo85: “He has a long history of making insensitive comments, and this time he burned too many bridges.”
Is he TOO Columbian? Oh, and by the way, you might want to rethink just how “effective” those administrations were/are in their “fight” against the narcos. You can do that this weekend instead of foolishly looking for way to insult me. I sure all would agree, you are losing and making yourself sound all the more like a raving illegal lunatic. Now I see why you get left alone every morning at the 7-11 day labor pickup point.
Giancarlo85
@Bob LaBlah: You are a dirt bag. Rethink what? They were effective. Do you even know what administrations I am talking about? They have reduced drug production in the country significantly. The former defense minister in the Uribe administration is now President and he is quite clean. You are an idiot and not very bright. You’re the real lunatic here. And the way you keep insulting me… I am here legally and I have a job that pays pretty well.
You Americans use all the drugs. Supply and demand.
Giancarlo85
Bob, you keep trying to insult me and now say I hang out in front of 7-11. You are a ra*c*ist and a xenophobe. Are you actually gay? OR do you just come on this site to trash talk young gay men?
Blackceo
@Giancarlo85:
“Take for example, Puerto Rico. There is always tension between white Latinos and black Latinos. This was also an issue in my country Colombia. People get treated differently… And the racial minorities that exist are often not allowed the same opportunity. Even take a look at the politicians… They are mainly white Latino.”
Absolutely. My grandmother’s side of the family is Puerto Rican. I visit every year for vacation and to see family. Many non Latinos think that all Puerto Ricans look like Ricky Martin and Jennifer Lopez. Not the case. I always chuckle when I hear people who travel to Puerto Rico for the first time comment on being surprised about “how many Black people live on the island” No. Puerto Ricans range in appearance from very fair skinned to very dark skinned, very fine hair to very coarse hair, and facial characteristics that are also just as wide ranging. Famous Afro Latinos who many people would just think are Black are Victor Cruz from the Giants, Tyson Beckford, Sammy Davis Jr, Arian Foster (Houston Texans), Carmelo Anthony (basketball), rappers Fabolous, Don Omar, Juelz Santana, actors Laz Alonso, Gina Torres, Tatyana Ali, Zoe Saldana, Stacey Dash, Rosario Dawson.
The Afro Latinos in Puerto Rico are less advantaged socioeconomically down there and there is tension because of those colorism issues. The “money” in Puerto Rico live in Condado, Isla Verde, Guaynabo, Dorado, Humacao. Some really beautiful gated communities there and they are pretty much all White Latinos. Some of the crime is spilling over to some of the more affluent areas of San Juan and the rich are not happy about it. Even among some in my damn family who live in those areas think they are better and try to keep as segregated from certain areas. But they’ve got their main homes in those areas and a lot of them have summer properties to go for the weekend along parts of the coastline. And yup, the politicians and those with real power are pretty much exclusively White Puerto Ricans. So I say all of that in reference again to Rodner who has continued to reinforce putting White Latinos on a pedestal with shows like his and comments he makes. People always complain about “the race card” being played. Well this is a perfect example of him playing the race card and its very disingenuous.
IvanPH
He should be suspended or reprimanded but not fired. Firing is a severe punishment for one stupid remark.
Michelle should respond, accept his apology then ask the tv station to not fire him. That’s what an open-minded liberal would do.
-patioblog-
Not to drag out this convo anymore, but you folks know that “mulatto” is considered derogatory and archaic, bi-ra ci al, multi-ra ci al is preferred these days.
Captain Obvious
Kudos to Univision, glad to see they have zero tolerance for that garbage. I actually watch their network from time to time.
It’s crazy how many black Hispanics refuse to identify as being black, they see it as a negative, and in their home countries(especially places like Brazil and Spain) the culture is all about being white.
I had a Brazilian explain to me once that if you have a certain amount of money you will be referred to as white no matter how brown your skin is and no matter what you choose to call yourself.
It’s very ugly, but people should really know by now that racism is not dead. I’d love for people to remember stuff like this when they’re claiming black people are playing a “race card” when an unarmed black person is shot dead or a young black student is facing discrimination from a teacher. No one is lying, no one is trying to make it seem like issues are bigger than they really are, people are upset about very real things.
I saw this queen on TV the other day slathering makeup all over his face to look like various women, it’s pretty clear to see he hates himself, and wants to be someone else. He’s not changing a few features, he’s changing everything. Karma’s a bitch… though I guess he’s more a victim than the cause.
Giancarlo85
@Blackceo: Some others include… Tego Calderon, Randy Acevedo (Jowell & Randy duo), Austin “Arcangel” Santos… just some examples of black Puerto Rican musicians (reggaeton stars mainly). Tego Calderon has often complained about discrimination in Puerto Rico…
This is a huge issue in Colombia too. The affluent may live in Medellin and Bogota, but a city like Cali is often viewed as far more impoverished and more Afro-latino. As a Latino, I’m slightly embarrassed by it all. I am not White, I am not black. I’m in the middle… darker, but not black (nor do I have any Afro-latino lineage as far as I know).
Patioblog, Agreed. The word “mulatto” is absolutely wrong and inappropriate.
Bob LaBlah
@Giancarlo85: Have a nice weekend.

I do not understand how people can own ways like this to appear as a man who is available. Condemn other people because of the color I think is impractical personality and frivolity. I know what you people, but I really want to tell you that you have been in the mind as the mind in the inversion, which is inconsistent with your ability to be in the right direction. For example, God is not being honest with you.
You are fascist idiot imbecile.
jockjack5
My goodness!
Nothing seems to energize the Queerty commenters more than race.
As a rather infrequent reader of this blog (maybe 3-4 times a month) over the past year, I am amazed how the volume of comments goes thru the roof when the subjects deal with racial issues.
I have found these particular comments illuminating as they pertain to the racial attitudes found in the Latino cultures of the Caribbean and Central and South America.
As a gay white cracker from South Carolina with Scots-Irish roots, I am reminded how some once thought Jimmy Carter had been “brushed” with the Tar Baby because of his over-size lips and the fact that his family had invented the peanut.
Bob LaBlah
@jockjack5: “As a gay white cracker from South Carolina with Scots-Irish roots, I am reminded how some once thought Jimmy Carter had been “brushed” with the Tar Baby because of his over-size lips and the fact that his family had invented the peanut.”
Why did you stop there? Go on, your from South Carolina you say? Ya’ll have two senators, one……well, I’m sure you know. And then there’s the other one, ol’ Lindsay. Neither one of them are married, have ANY romantic ties to a woman and claim to have assault rifles for sport shooting. All of THAT can be verified. Don’t you find that a bit more “soul stirring”, shall we say, then digging up a now octogenarian who, believe it or not, probably did mean well but went about it the wrong way handing over that canal to a bunch…….well, you know what I mean I’m sure (hint, wink, elbow nudge).
jockjack5
@Bob LaBlah:
Well, I’m not really sure what to make of your rather dis-jointed comment, but I did not find it particularly “soul stirring”.
I suppose you may have lost your focus (if you had one) when I made the farcical comment about Jimmy Carter.
At any rate, it was entirely unnecessary to poke fun at the little general-for-life Manuel Noreiga. With his horrible complexion (they called him pine-apple head), he’s been traumatized enough.

I can’t even make out what Bob posted. It sounds so ridiculous.

I mean really, if you go back and read how you started your comment off I am sure you will understand why me of ALL people got happy.
Giancarlo85
@Bob LaBlah: There is something “normal” about the way you live? What is “normal” about you? Most people don’t live and talk like you.
Bob LaBlah
@Giancarlo85: “Most people don’t live and talk like you.”

@Bob LaBlah: And the little nasty xenophobe is back at it again. I don’t hang out at 7-11. You seem to have such a small view of the world. It must be sad being you… When was the last time you had any interaction with a male or a date? Thirty years ago?
And I work at an office. So please keep your stupid r,a,c,i,s,t thoughts to yourself.
