Over Stepping…

A San Diego school board definitely crossed the line. Rather than focusing on reading, writing and 'rithmetic, the Grossmont Union High School District's board decided to study up on its anti-gay politics: "The board voted 4-0 to pass a resolution endorsing Proposition 8, which would amend the state Constitution to recognize marriage only between a man and a woman." This is so wrong in so many ways. And these same people do nothing to protect gay (and other minority) students from harassment and bullying. Any area south of LA should really not be part of California.

Wow. Guess the trustees must view their opposition as a civics lesson.

Check 'em out here, with their contact info:

http://www.guhsd.net/board/

Dick Hoy is the trustee who abstained according to the article.

CTnSF wait! I'm in Long Beach, and I don't want to be booted out of CA! Plus, oddly, the Laguna Beach city council voted to oppose Prop 8, and they're all Orange County repubs. Just another indication of how this is a really really close fight.

That's just chickensh!t to use a school board for 'moral' grandstanding when education standards are so weak. I'm sure these same pantywaists think the earth is flat, was made ~6K yrs ago and will end in 2012.

Since when is a CA state funded public school board allowed to take a hateful political stance? Especially since this a religious motivated hateful proposition. If they want to take that stance, then they should have their funding cut. Let the Xtian right bail them out!

Ok EMB, Long Beach stays, but sorry, Orange County has got to go, regardless of gay day in Disneyland and Laguna Beach's vote.

I checked out the story and apparently it's the Grossmont district, which has a history of abuse to both staff and students.
Instead of just blogging amongst ourselves, some of us might like to visit the webpage, guhsd.net/board/, which not only has pictures of the scoundrels who voted for this, but their telephone numbers and e-mail adresses.
Might be a good opportunity to speak your mind where it counts.

I've written the whole school Board. I also wrote the one Board Member who didn't vote and thanked him. I encourage every to do this. They need to know how their actions have affected people/

My kids attended school in the GUHSD, at one of the best high schools in the district. I was mortified to discover that, judging by the SAT scores, our school was just mediocre by national standards.

Grossmont Union High school district is in east county San Diego. Serving the areas on Lakeside, Santee, El Cajon. These are not the best areas of an already conservative San Diego.

I just think it is silly that the school board are so afraid of talking to children and teenagers about sexuality when our culture is seething with sexual images and fascination. They are desperately clinging to a romantic notion of marriage and family that doesn't really exist anymore. It is not the "gays" that are ruining marriage, it's the popularity of divorce, unwed mothers, fundamentalist Mormon polygamy cults, and basically anyone that doesn't fit their mold. The "traditional marriage" does not work for many/most of the population anymore.

If these School Board members can't deal with gay marriage, how well do you think they cover those other more common issues like divorce, single parent families, and all other different forms of family?

By any chance is this congressional district have David BIG OL' GURL Dreier, and his lover his chief of staff who has the HIGHEST salary of any Congressional office?
They sound clueless enough to hate queers and vote for a self loathing closet case.
