Pass a Hate Crimes Bill for Matthew, Angie, Imaje, and Lawrence

It’s shocking to think it’s already been 10 years since Matthew Shepard was murdered because of his sexuality. But for his mom Judy, it probably feels like only yesterday. It’s fantastic to see this woman move forward with such courage everyday, fighting for hate crimes legislation. A Congressional committee will vote tomorrow on whether to move a new bill forward, or, like the bills that have come and gone in the federal bureaucracy, let it slip away into the ether, while the queer community sees one more means of protection disappear.

The video is being pushed by the Human Rights Campaign, distributed to members in a letter from executive director Joe Solmonese. And for all the shit HRC receives, including criticism lobbed from this website, at the very least they have the resources to set up a camera, upload a video to YouTube, and encourage action.

This is how you move people, folks…devastatingly effective. How anyone could watch this video and vote against hate crimes legislation (while claiming to be Christian, or human for that matter)is beyond me.

I’m so sorry that Judy Shepard had to lose her son to senseless violence, but I’m glad to know that her son Matthew did not die in vain, as Judy has become one of our most valued champions/ supporters.
