Pat Robertson, founder of the Christian Broadcasting Network and host of The 700 Club, is putting his own spin on the fight for equality. Right Wing Watch reports that after an appearance from conservative poster children Kim Davis and Barronelle Stutzman on The 700 Club in which they discussed the legal battles they lost after their blatant displays of antigay discrimination, Robertson chimed in with his thoughts on “the gays,” as he’s prone to do.
After acknowledging the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in favor of same-sex marriage, Robertson went on a tirade about how “they don’t want to stop there.”
“It is vindictive now. We’re not talking about having rights from the poor, oppressed gays, we’re talking about taking away the freedoms of everybody who disagrees with them,” Robertson stated.
He urged his viewers to take a stand for people like Davis and Stutzman, who in the gospel according to Robertson have become victims of the press, and subsequently, laughing stocks. Mr. 700 Club clearly doesn’t understand that these women turned themselves into jokes all on their own through their bigoted, not to mention illegal, actions and needed little help from the media.

The televangelist punctuated his rambling with the warning, “They somehow think this is a civil rights issue. They better be careful what they’re doing because they’re taking away the rights of everybody.”
So there you have it. Robertson’s warped thought process has him believing that the quest for LGBT equality is taking away the rights of others. As they say in the South, bless his heart.

He, like so many others, boils the issue down to the right to “disagree with. . . “. The problem is that this “disagreement” means that they want the equal rights, privileges, taken away from LGBT couples. Throughout the same-sex marriage debates, the homophobes tried to sound magnanimous and equality-minded by stating that they believed in “equal rights, not special rights.”
Now they want religious people to have the VERY SPECIAL right to discriminate because of their personal religious beliefs. So, what if you took out the word “religious” and said that all people can discriminate based on their “personal beliefs”? After all if you really believe in equal rights, then atheists should enjoy the same “special right” to have their beliefs respected. That’s only fair, right?
So now, having said that everyone should have the right to not violate their own conscience, or their “personal beliefs,” we are back to square one — to a time before the civil rights movement, before the Holocaust, before the Emancipation proclamation. It’s “anything goes, folks, just tell us what your personal beliefs are and we have to respect them. Believe in separation of the races? No problem, you don’t have to issue marriage licenses to interracial couples. Believe the Jews carry collective guilt for Jesus’death? No problem, you don’t have to serve them.”
The whole idea that treating people equally is an attack on “religious freedom” is just more Christian paranoia.
