Paul Ryan’s Wisconsin Hometown Extends Benefits To Gay Employees

Failed vice-presidential candidate Paul Ryan has blamed his loss last Tuesday on “urban areas,” but even his hometown of Janesville, WI, doesn’t agree with his degradation of the LGBT community: The Wisconsin Gazette reports that yesterday the Janesville City Council approved a measure extending domestic-partnership benefits to city employees and their same-sex partners. The vote was 6-1.

“This decision marks an important victory for fairness. Janesville’s vision for creating an inclusive and welcoming workplace makes them a leader in our efforts to build a more fair and just state for all Wisconsinites,” said Katie Belanger of Fair Wisconsin.

Janesville joins Milwaukee, Appleton, Racine, Eau Claire and Manitowoc in offering partner benefits to gay city employees, as do Aurora Health Care, Kimberly-Clark, Marquette University, MillerCoors, SC Johnson and a number of other corporations based in the state.
