The Olympic diving dynamo just doffed his speedo for ESPN‘s annual “Body” issue, and we’re way down.

“When I look around at my contemporaries,” he says, “I’d say I’m probably in better shape than most of them. It’s all about making healthy choices.”

While health has obviously always been important to the athlete,  it became even more of a priority when he was diagnosed as HIV-positive in 1988.

“HIV taught me that I’m a lot stronger than I ever believed I was,” he says. “Also, not to take anything for granted. I didn’t think I would see 30, and here I am at 56.”

“I look at working out and doing something physically active every day as being as important as taking my meds.”

ESPN‘s “Body” issue will hit stands on July 8.
