um, it wasn’t a pick up, it was his ex-bf. Though not the safest practice they were both consenting adults. Leave him alone, we all make errors in judgement or choose to engage in risky behavior sometimes. I climb cliffs with only 3 or 4 cams to catch me if I fall, sometimes I free climb. I am mostly appalled at the apparent support that DLB is enjoying on these comments. I’m sure all the young men he “mentors” can quickly peruse PerezHilton to see just how the big boys play. The only thing more lame than his apology was that completely mythologized and utterly ridiculous screenplay he won the award for.
What he did wasn’t a crime, was probably perfectly reasonable – for someone not mentoring young gays, and worse holding himself up as a voice for political advocacy. Hence he has become political and a politician by proxy. Ms California is hardly arbiter of family values or even a political voice – but every last one of you savaged her (and did her a great disservice, and annoyed me by filling up the airwaves with USELESS nonsense).
What is good for the goose – my friends is good for the gander. What each of you seem to miss (and feel free to review the comments here & elsewhere) to see the true signal he is sending to our youth. They think he is hot, they want to emulate him, etc…for his rather blatant stupidity – and that alone (not any moralistic bs) he needs to be held accountable. Further I personally am mounting a protest of him as a Marshal in my pride parade.

@daknyc: The difference is, Carrie Prejean’s stance itself was bigoted and bad objectively, unto itself. DLB’s advocacy of safe sex is not. The two scenarios are not even remotely analogous.
Again, what he did was not a good idea, but he was not the one who allowed the young gays he was mentoring to see it– Perez Hilton was.

No, DLB is no different from them. Actually, he’s worse, because he pontificates. He is no hero. Hero is the gay soldier in Iraq who never knows whether today is going to be his last day. Black wrote a screenplay, for God’s sake. Which is fine. But then he gets on this pulpit of going around talking to gay youth about safe sex. And there he is, getting banged raw. Sure, do it if you must, or want to, or can; in the end, it’s your biz, but not in a position where you are a role model to so many gay kids who desperately need serious and responsible adults to show them that yes, it is ok to be gay, and no, one doesn’t have to get HIV to be it. And on top of that filming it? Watch out for more skeletons in his closet my fellow brethren…

I am not going to sit here and bash Lance on his sex tape or bare backing. I have never heard him take a “holier than thou” stance on sexual morality. I don’t think there is anything wrong with taping yourself, its just being sex positive and fun. The bare backing is a personal decision. But I think we can learn from each others experiences if we want to or they fit for us.
I doubt if Lance was thinking that one day he would be this famous and looked up to as a role model. I doubt that he thought he would ever receive a huge award for mentoring youth. And I don’t think that what took place invalidates any of the good he has done. He has done a lot and we should be grateful for that. I do think that in learning from this we have to ask ourselves as individuals what are the possibilities in life and might those be ours. I have worked with LGBT youth myself and my God if you want to fall in love with a part of our community its a great segment to throw yourself into. I live in Vancouver and though Canada is very liberal and light years ahead of most places when it comes to gay rights it is still is far from perfect. Vancouver has a lot of youth who live in the streets. A huge percentage of these youth are LGBT and have been thrown out of their homes for being “different”. To say that they suffer from low self worth, fear and are more often than not “exploited” is an understatement. Those of us who have made it through to becoming functional adults are the hope of these kids. Not only these but all of our LGBT young people. They desperately need our love, our guidance, our dollars and our example. Its up to us to help heal them. And by doing so, we heal ourselves.
My point is that if you ever think that you might in be in a position to work with our youth you may want to consider the choices that you make. I think that the only problem with Lances bare backing beyond his personal health is that our youth, with so few gay people to look up to, look to people like Lance as an example. I don’t think any of us want to see those beautiful faces that are a reflection of what our own once were falling victim to a disease with huge life long consequences. A lot of kids might say, “well Lance did it and look how wonderful things have turned out for him”. I don’t think that Lance was thinking about where his life was heading when he chose to film himself bare backing. And there lays the lesson, we are never sure what we might find our hearts leading us to. But Lance need not feel bad about his choice. He can use it to bring awareness to our youth that sex is fun, creative but while having a blast always stay conscious. I think he will turn the lemons here into lemonade and we should support him in doing that. He’s a good guy and deserves our support.

It’s ironic to hear a young gay man reflect on overcoming self-destructive tendencies while photographic evidence of an incredibly self-destructive act is blazing it’s way across the internet. (Make that two self-destructive acts if you count the stupidity of an actor allowing himself to be photographed having sex and believing that those won’t get out on the Net.)
Unless AIDS got cured while I was napping, bareback sex is still totally risky and NOT COOL (especially with somebody who can’t even be trusted with photos) and that makes this guy, nice as he seems to be, a terrible role model for gay youth. If this organization was more ethical, they would have found a replacement award winner.
Yeah, yeah, yeah–he made a great speech. Congratulations. He went through Hell as a gay teen and loved Harvey Milk. Join the club. Most of my dead friends got HIV in their 20’s from somebody they trusted. And they were beautiful and soulful too. Let’s hope that the talented Mr. Black lasts long enough to learn a few more life lessons.

We are talking about adults who are accountable + responsible for their own personal life choices + decisions. It’s not Dustin’s job to babysit every person who might decide to emulate him by having unprotected sex, knowing the risks involved.
