PHOTOS: Familiar Faces And Surprising Additions To This Year’s OUT 100

Though its been teasing names all month, Out Magazine officially announced all of the honorees on this year’s OUT 100 last night in a glam gala at Skylight Soho in New York City.

We already knew folks like androgynous model Andrej Pejic and repentant GOP operative Ken Mehlman were on the list, but the full roster includes Larry Kramer (whose The Normal Heartwas the toast of Broadway this year), Daniel Hernandez (the intern who saved Rep. Gabrielle Giffords’ life), Andii Viveros (a trans teen who overcame bullying to become prom queen), screenwriter Dustin Lance Black (whose biopic J. Edgar is out now), California State Senator Mark Leno (who helped pass the FAIR Education Act), Dan Savage (frequent glitterbomb victim and founder of the It Gets Better campaign), actor Colman Domingo (who nabbed a Tony nod for The Scottsboro Boys) and singer Adam Lambert (um, duh).

As usual, though, we’re scratching our heads at some of the names on the list: Mehlman, of course, but also Geri Jewell (the former Facts of Life star who just happens to have a memoir out this year), Brad Goreski (the former Rachel Zoe minion who just happens to have a new reality show), Nicolas Ripolli (a model—how daring!), Howard Bragman (the Hollywood publicist who makes bank on celebrity coming-out stories), Andy Cohen (the gay world’s answer to Carson Daly) and Kathy Griffin (bitch ain’t even gay!)

And yes, before you even ask, we’re mostly jealous we weren’t included.

Click through for a slideshow of OUT 100 honorees, shot for the magazine by photographer Gavin Bond in the style of some iconic pop culture.

@Dan: Actually the fact that model Nicolas Ripoll has the courage to be featured in “Out” is “daring.” In an industry still dominated by non-model gays, there are surprisingly few successful out gay/bi models in contrast to the glory days of gay male models in the 70s and 80s. Needless to say, Nicolas’ career took off in Europe rather than the US. So lose the snark! If you question the validity of my comment, please feel free to discuss the same with Daniel Villarreal or ask any of the few closeted, successful gay male models pressured by their agents to remain closeted. Best, JeffR

Ugh Larry Kramer has never done anything for LGBT people and has always been a professional victim and complainer.

There’s a reason why the LGBT community in and around Seattle and the PNW hates Dan Savage. Dan Savage is very biphobic, has practiced bisexual erasure saying that bisexual men don’t exist, and told gay men and lesbians that they should avoid dating and relationships with bisexual men and women. Just recently he said how bisexual teens and young adults, or anyone under 36 is not really bisexual and they’ll eventually come out as gay or lesbian. He’s also very Transphobic. This makes him a hypocrite and he’s the last person you’d want running a GLBT youth program or anti-bullying program since he’s against Bisexuals and Trans people and teens, and he’s a bully who knows nothing about human sexuality, LGBT people, politics, or issues that LGBT people face. Like Perez Hilton he’s an embarrassment to the LGBT community, and not any sort of spokesperson just a media whore.

He only cares about himself and is your typical selfish and backstabbing queen that is racist too. Matter of fact the only time he pretends to care about anyone but himself, is when he wants something from them.

I have noticed how people who are “It gets better” queens worship DS and conveniently ignore or pretend that he’s not racist, transphobic, misogynistic, biphobic, and think that it’s perfectly OK when he said how ‘HIV+ people are a ticking viral time bomb and you should avoid dating them or having relationships with them.’

Meanwhile everyone else knows how his “It gets better” stunt was nothing more than self promotion, a chance for Savage to yet again be a media and fame whore, and get a reality TV show on MTV.

Every year I say this should be called the OUT 1OO HOLLYWOOD GAYS. As usual there are plenty of actors, reality stars, fashion designers, models, etc.

Where are the school teachers, doctors, lawyers, etc.?

What has Andy Cohen, Kathi Griffin, Rupaul, Dustin Bareback or Adam Lambert done in the past year that they haven’t alredy done and been honored for in past years? OUT editors need to work harder to find more racial, age, gender, career diversity.

Really you’re bitching about Andy Cohen’s inclusion? I would argue that there is no more out and honest Gay man on television, he’s always autheentically himself, honest about his sexuality, and represents a very particularly Gay point of view in the otherwise very straight talk show world. His show is also a platform for a regular guest list of other out actors and performers. As a programming executive for Bravo, a network that millions of Gay men, and Gay sympathetic viewers watch, he is undeniably a powerful force in the television industry (a consideration for the list I would imagine. His programming is often more relevant to LGBT viewers than anything on Logo. He’s also adorable and very funny.

@12 Chadboy You’re right that non-Hollywood types need to make themselves KNOWN so they can be honored (if you consider Out recognition an honor). You can’t exactly honor people who hide in their own little worlds.

To answer your question here is what Adam Lambert did in the past year in addition to his social media statements, interviews and having his boyfriend by his side at events:

From Wiki to save time reinventing the wheel:

In October 2010, Lambert collaborated a second Signature Collection design with The Pennyroyal Studio, the Infinity pendant, which raised $43,092 for the DonorsChoose.org charity. The pendant design was retired in October 2010.

In October 2010, Lambert released a link to his 1:36 minute It Gets Better PSA video message for gay teenagers. The message was recorded while Lambert was on his Glam Nation tour. In the 90-second clip, Lambert encouraged viewers to have pride in themselves and not allow bullies to win.

In January 2011, Lambert announced his charity: water campaign on Twitter, initially setting a goal of $29,000 to commemorate his 29th birthday. Funds raised by charity: water go towards bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations. Fans surpassed the goal set by Lambert in less than five hours, and donations reached $60,000 by the end of the next 24 hours. On Lambert’s actual birthday, more than $115,000 in donations came in. According to the charity, that amount broke the record for most donations in a single day, and crashed their servers. By the end of the campaign, Lambert’s fans had raised $323,803, which helped 16,190 people receive clean water.[135]

In March 2011, after a performance on American Idol, Lambert announced that a Billboard remix version of “Aftermath”, a song featured on his debut album For Your Entertainment, would go on sale with a portion of the proceeds going to support The Trevor Project, the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LGBT youth.

In August 2011, Lambert collaborated a third Signature Collection design with The Pennyroyal Studio, a Peace pendant, which raised $43,500 for The Trevor Project charity before the pendant was retired in October 2011.

In August 2011, Equality California Los Angeles held their annual Equality Awards event honoring inspirational leaders, and allied organizations. Adam Lambert was honored with the group’s ‘Equality Idol’ award for being an exemplary role model for the LGBT community. It was presented by Grammy nominated recording artist and producer, Sam Sparro.

In September 2011 PFLAG National Los Angeles held an event in honor of Leila Lambert and Adam Lambert. Each was presented with an award—an inverted triangle for Adam, a heart for Leila—which each make up a part of the PFLAG logo representing parental and familial love and support for LGBT people.

In October 2011, $2,100 in donations came in on behalf of the Adam Lambert Glambert Fan Army for the MTV Dance Party Marathon which raised funds to combat bullying in honor of National Bullying Prevention Month to be split between the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), It Gets Better Project, The Gay Straight Alliance Network (GSA), Human Rights Campaign (HRC), The Trevor Project and Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD).

I included Charity Water and Donors Chose because it shows Lambert’s message of advocacy for humans not just LGBT causes, thereby making a statement to heteros that LGBT people are PEOPLE first. Also, Donors Chose donations were targeted to the arts programs.

Last month he did an indepth interview with The Advocate again focusing on the on the job training of being an out public figure navigating the road of radio/music virtually alone.

His mom is also always visible and active like here in her video clip: http://news.advocate.com/post/11700483603/the-impact-of-adam-lambert

Adam Lambert has raised over 1 million dollars for charity in the short 2 year period he’s been on the public radar. Imagine that. Name me another LGBT fund raising machine like him :)
