What do a jock gym teacher, a taxidermist, a YouTube sensation, a cat-obsessed social worker, and a “butch sissy tenderqueer” all have in common?
They’ll each be competing for the coveted title of Mr. Transman 2013 tomorrow evening at the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn.
Now in its third year, the Mr. Transman competition features a diverse group of gentlemen who will battle it out on stage in the following five categories: platform, swimsuit, interview, talent and evening wear.
They “female-to-male competition” will be judged by a panel of celebrated queer personalities, who will have a tough decision to make. We have pictures of the contestants and these are some seriously sexy studs.

I love how some transmen look like total flamers…yet still totally male; still others look like complete “tops” or trade even. For some reason this just warms my heart.
But am I wrong in thinking it’s harder in general for a transman to “pass” than a transwomen? I’m seldom “fooled” (for want of a better word), I believe. But then again how would one even notice to register “sucessfull” ones!

I just melt like butter on a hot day when I see people brave enough to say to the world. “This is who I am.” In a perfect world we would all just be nice and love each other. I do not understand the whole Trans thing..? But it does not change the love that I have for them. Or you.

@PRINCE OF SNARKNESS aka DIVKID: I think you’re wrong. I think it’s much harder for a transwoman (male to female) to pass. Testosterone gives men very pronounced and recognizable physical traits that are difficult if not impossible to “hide” without significant surgery (an adam’s apple, larger nose, broader forehead, wider shoulders, stronger-shaped jaw, male pattern baldness, etc.)
Going from female to male simply allows one to develop the male characteristics they would have naturally if they had been born male — with one glaring exception of course being the breasts that need to be removed.
Remember that we all start out in the womb as female, and males develop from there in the presence of testosterone. So when you’re going from a female to a male you’re recreating that same process after the fact. The one thing you unfortunately can’t develop this way is a penis.

@CaptainFabulous: Excellent point…But it really goes both ways. Sometimes it is hard to tell, but the tell is always there. More oft than not something is not quite right. But I have to say Aydian is the only one that could fool me. The rest just look like lesbians to me… But I am really stupid about that stuff.

@AuntieChrist: As a trans guy who frequently travels in gay men’s circles, I think it’s hilarious how convinced some people are that you can “always tell.” Presumably, in your daily life, the only trans men you’re aware of coming into contact with are the ones that you can read as trans. Most of us who pass don’t carry signs. I’ve had guys tell me they don’t even believe I’m trans–it’s apparently unfathomable that I could have a fuller beard, deeper voice, better looking chest than them, etc etc. The sentiment seems more based in social assumptions about gender than the scientific facts of our bodies — Capt Fabulous is right that testosterone produces the same male secondary sex characteristics in anyone who takes enough of it… that obviously doesn’t describe all the contenders for this competition (lots of trans men don’t take T, or don’t take very much, or haven’t taken it very long). But it doesn’t mean that looking like a “real” male is some special magical quality that you can only have if you were born that way.

Trans men and some lesbians really confuse me sexually (unfortunately this bear doesn’t have a shot with most of them). I playfully chased after a lesbian for a year at my former job, because she was so attractive to me. It became distracting to the point where it was hard to be friends with her. Buck Angel creates makes my pants get tight. I guess I am just attracted to masculine people no matter the plumbing down stairs.

@brightred: Thank you. I really have only known two male to female Trans folk and it was a small town. My experience with the female to male is only a little more than that. All I really know is what I read and it seems to be rather limited in scope. There is the psychology of course but I guess I may know someone and not know. If you know what I mean. LOL I hope I was not offensive…I admit my ignorance…I think most gays understand Transgender like most straights understand gays. Not well at all 🙂
