Is that the kind of thing you say upfront to your friends who have partners who don’t fit your view of what a man should look like? We can’t all be picture perfect 24/7 smiling adonises, but then superficiality is not a nice quality either. How do any of us know what Elton was feeling? If he’d been smiling would we be having this discussion? Probably those who have nothing good to say would for the sake of it. No. In Canada there is only marriage. A straight couple who live together is automatically considered common law or “equivalent to married”, at least for tax purposes, but I don’t think they press that for us.

There is no other legal status like “civil partnership”.

I think Elton and David did that as a statement against the institution of marriage and all its inequities and contradictions (despite the fact that many of those contradictions have been done away with here).
Fine by me… it’s their partnership and they should be free to define themselves however they wish.

Thanks for clarifying that, interesting too. From what I know from a cousin in the UK who has a civil partnership, they are recognized only in Spain and France so far, not sure about other EU countries though but I doubt that will change since five of them already allow us to marry and more will follow, probably Denmark and possibly Iceland. Belgium from what I know doesn’t allow gay married couples to adopt thus far, civil partnerships in the UK do though.
