On Saturday, August 18, entertainer, politician and community leaders celebrated landmark LGBT victories at the Los Angeles Equality Awards. While marriage equality and other issues got their due, it was California Senate Bill 1172, which would end the use of reparative therapy on minors, that everyone was buzzing about.
Joining the celebration at the Beverly Hilton were writer Jonathan Capehart, Glee‘s Jane Lynch, singer Thelma Houston, Jackie Christie (Basketball Wives LA), Romi Klinger, (The Real L Word), comedian Ross Matthews, Troy Byer (John Q), California State Senator Ted Lieu, California Senator Gloria Negrete-McCloud, Rep. Linda Sanchez, California Assemblywoman Betsy Butler and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who received an award for his commitment to LGBT equality.
Additional awards went to Sanie Andres for his longtime activism and Children’s Hospital L.A. Division of Adolescent Medicine for its groundbreaking LGBT youth-treatment programs and the largest program for trans youth in the world.
