you could have worded what you said to not sound so ignorant, however I think that someone’s preference is not up for judgement.
I too do not find myself sexually attracted to men of eastern asian descent and find it ridiculous someone has the gall to tell me im racist.
I know what I am. That is not up for debate.
And yes, this man has it going on.

@sparkle obama:
I suppose you would like me to say, “Not my type”?
Is this what you mean by “grow up”?
That makes sense.

Enough already! There’s no evidence that anyone is being racist here. People have preferences: tall/short, bear/twink, blond/brunette, etc. That extends, for many people, to attraction (or not) to different races. Some people may not find Asian guys very attractive, but may think African-Americans are hot. Others may like Asian guys but not be turned on by Latins. Preference does not equal racism. Ricky’s mistake was putting his out there in a public forum, instead of just keeping his preferences to himself and lingering on photo number 14.
· Flag
@Dr. Pedantic: sure, there’s nothing wrong with being attracted to a guy despite his membership in a certain race. mr. tang should be proud he made the cut. It’s called the taye diggs effect. ;)

i just love the backhanded compliments. For example, “pretty (insert compliment) for an Asian.” So you’re pretty much saying Asians aren’t cute. Which brings out the ugly in you.
While honesty is the best policy, I think it’s more fitting if u don’t have nothing nice to say, don’t say it.
· Flag
I’m what you might call an Asian. I was born, by chance, with a certain set of phenotypes that are mapped onto my body a certain way. I look Asian to you, but that’s not how I see myself, because racial categories are hard to define. I’d rather not make immediate assumptions based on what a person looks like. Do you think that by essentializing people who look like us, and then offering a backhanded compliment you are being even nice? Don’t kid yourself and certainly, do not patronize me. You, the collective you, are quite the pretzel.
· Flag
@hardmannyc: Depends on the region. Most Southeast Asians have darker skin tones than, say, the Japanese.
I’m not willing to say people who aren’t attracted to Asians or Arabs or Europeans, etc. are racist, but I do find it a litte odd. But then, so is fetishizing race.

I have to say that I have never visited a country that has as many downright trashy, stupid, ignorant people as I have found in the U.S. and I have been to a lot of places.
I am Godsmacked when I read comments from gay people, which at this point in history are the most marginalized, abused and discriminated group in your country, make comments such as the one about wearing sunglasses. Your a great shame to your own kind & a prime example of why Americans are held in such low regard. I really don’t know what can ever be done to heal people like this, I wonder if they are just missing a few brain cells and cannot help it.

@troy: Americans are the greatest thing that ever happened to this world. You’d be speaking fucking German and swearing allegiance to one of Hitler’s successors if it wasn’t for us. We police this stupid, god forsaken planet (despite my wishes against it). You think if China or Russia was the world’s lone superpower, they’d go through the shit we do? Think they’d fund the UN? Think they’d have their troops on the front lines for NATO missions? Think they’d open up their economy to the world and help third world nations rise from poverty based on the goods they export even at the sacrifice of their own manufacturing sectors? Do you think they’d share the internet if they created it?
Fuck you and everybody else who looks down on this glorious nation. I bet wherever you come from is no prize.

It’s really shocking to me to read the under-handed racist and ignorant comments on this site. These are the same people who cry foul when they mistakenly believe that communities of color don’t support us. For each non-white person who makes a homophobic comment, I can point to two gay people who make racist comments. As for speaking German, you forget that if not for the French coming to our rescue in the revolutionary war, we’d be a “commonwealth” state. We entered the war at the very end when everyone else had already been sacrificing for years fighting the Nazis. We don’t “police” the world, we go where we can make money. We don’t import to help out “third world” countries, we move our industries overseas so the top 1% of us can bleed the rest of us dry while abusing local populations. The UN is funded by member nations, NOT only by the US. And BTW, the UN suffers from funding issues because member nations have not made the full pledged contributions. Guess who owes the most back funding? (in case you haven’t caught up yet, it is the US). The world economy is open, everyone trades with everyone else and buys exports from “third world” countries – and guess what? China’s continuing willingness to lend the US money is the only thing keeping us from economic collapse right now – so yes, obviously China is “helping” us from your logic, and if Russia had the money, I’m sure they would be “helping” us as well. China and Russia, like the US is not “helping” to be kind, they are doing it for their own selfish reasons – just like the US acts as a “police” to places that have oil and resources for us but not desolate places. The moral of this long post is that if you pick up a book and read once in a while, you wouldn’t show your ignorance on a public post.

Reality Check…I strongly support every word you posted. Because you have the right to express yourself also very knowledgeably and eloquently as well. It is very nice to know that people are informed and really care. You are extremely well-read and certainly not ignorant…even on a public post. But be sure to respect others’ opinions. Being the intelligent person you are,I am sure you agree wholeheartedly. Cheer up. I am curious to know what Mr. Tang feels about the serious political views shared by many on this site. Thank you also Reality Check. But can we lighten up a bit? Even intellectuals like yourself need a break.Again, thanks to Mr. Tang. To think that one photograph would inspire such intensity. What say we all cheer up a bit. I am very sure this site has really worn thin political beliefs…although as I mentioned earlier< we all have a right to our beliefs. I just think this site is ready for some lighter conversation, if you will. Hats off to you, Mr.Tang…you have inspired many to speak about what they feel…and isn’t that what it’s really all about? Thank you for sharing Reality Check. Chill out. Mr. Tang’s boots remind me of Ziggy Stardust-era David Bowie. Or Suzi Quatro…put down that book for a moment (we all read) and play Ziggy Stardust! David Bowie…now there’s a revolutionary for ‘ya! Everything’s Alright!

Having a fetish for a particular race (a “type”) is one thing. Saying specifically that you’re put off by a particular race is another.
The former is dubious. The latter clearly means you have issues.
And yeah, it’s totally racism. It’s not the kind of deliberate racism that we can hold you accountable for (as opposed to, say, employment discrimination). But it means that you see things in stereotypes, and think in stereotypes.
And just because all your douchey friends say they’re “not into Asians”, that doesn’t mean it’s acceptable for you to say it too.

Clear;y, Ted C. some of the comments posted above have racist overtones. It is unfortunate and rather sad…but it prevails heavily in the USA. I have traveled throughout Europe and this type of racism may exist but I did not experience it at all. I am Caucasian and I did not experience nor see racist behavior. There will always be “haters” and most of the time “haters” are just insecure people who need to ridicule others. This is the lowest form of self elevation. What can you do, really? Set an example for others, be kind, be yourself and do not let others subject you to ridicule for any reason. Can we lighten up now? This is really getting heavy and I think the photo of Mr.Tang is very Helmut Newton or David La Chapelle. The photograph is Art transcending barriers. As an artist myself, I do not know how the comments became so negative about a cool photograph. Just chill out. Think positive…and others around you will usually respond in kind. Hey, anybody got anything positive to offer?I am sure someone out there can offer something positive…after all,,this is about a photograph. Really…Everything’s Alright!

So, im not sure why this evolved into a political conversation.
@scott ny’er: For example, “pretty (insert compliment) for an Asian.” So you’re pretty much saying Asians aren’t cute. Which brings out the ugly in you.
Umm.. yes your right. In this context I am saying I dont find asian men attractive.
According to a large majority, this makes me racist?
So by this questionable logic, because I don’t find women sexually attractive, I must also be sexist?
I call bullshit. People are entitled to like what they like.
Racism:
a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one’s own race is superior and has the right to rule others.
Im not seeing where sexual preference comes into play here.
· Flag
@Ricky:
AGREED
only americans would get political-and sounds dumb and apologetic whilst @ it-in a freakin hot guy’s blog.
the model: perfection, the kinda guy you could just lick for hours, but then you’d feel creepy and overly complimentary.
· Flag
Quoting a dictionary definition of “racism” and saying you don’t “fit” that definition is a flawed defense. Everyone who voted for Prop 8 can take your flawed logic and say they’re not homophobic because the dictionary definition of “homophobic” says nothing about not letting gays get married. This isn’t junior high school, you’re just playing word games. You are what you are – you’re a racist, admit it and move on. Maybe then you can deal with your issues.
Also, not being sexually attracted to women is NOT the same thing as posting on a public forum that Asian men are not attractive and this one is an exception. Asian men not being your “type” and making a public declaration that they are unattractive are two very different things. Your earlier post that this model is “cute for an Asian guy” implies that as a rule of thumb, Asians are not cute. Having that attitude implicitly tells the rest of us that you believe that your “race” is superior (at least in terms of looks) – that’s why you’re a racist!
· Flag
Please “All Knowing One” elaborate to me again why me quoting a definition of “racism” doesnt prove my point.
I would like to know how my sexual preference in any way says “I’m better than you.”
Better yet, don’t.
Im not a racist. And I stand by that.
· Flag
Your earlier post that this model is “cute for an Asian guy” implies that as a rule of thumb, Asians are not cute.
Given how subjective sexual attraction is, I think all it tells you is the subjective taste of the person making the statement. Anything else you read into it.

@Alec: So I suppose when homophobes say “you’re a decent person for a gay guy” I should see that as a compliment rather than an underhanded insult that it is. When you use a qualifier to say somebody has a positive trait for whatever category that they are in, there is no reading into it – the meaning is crystal clear. I didn’t read anything into it, Ricky is a racist – he knows it (as Sparkle Obama might say, his mama knows it) and now we all know it. As for Ricky, if he wants to know why quoting a dictionary doesn’t “prove” his point, he should take Freshmen English – I don’t have time to explain things to ignorant racists.
· Flag
@Reality Check: Except that the statement you’re referring to isn’t about their personal sexual attraction to another person. Apples and oranges. Unless your argument is that people who aren’t generally attracted to Asians, Europeans, Africans, etc. are racist as a result. I’m not willing to go that far.

I really cannot believe that few of the gentlemen who have commented on the photo of Mr. Tang are still going on about politics, racism, PC terminology, etc. It is a photograph. It is artistic expression. Whether you like this guy’s heritage or not is your trip. Go with it. But some of the comments here just keep taking everyone interested in circles. Enough with all of the negativity. Admit it…it is a cool photograph. Some of you are displaying a great need to use this site to voice your own political beliefs and agendas. This gay novel has pretty extreme views about religion and being gay all done in a sci-fi style sory, the writer was even almost killed when this book was first published. After being banned in his own country it is now available.
check the plot – As predicted by Isaac Newton the second coming happened and as the world waited to see what was about to happen an appointed man was sent to meet God, hours later God had vanished and the man came out immortal; no apocalypse, no destruction and no salvation. This gave birth to a chain of holy wars that almost chattered Earth’s civilizations and so giving birth to a mass colonization of planets to ensure peace by separation. Thousands of years later all was at peace by until Endings were born; humans connected to their planets in such a way that they are capable of destroying them should they wish it. Now Earth’s Ending has been born and the day to pass judgment draws near.

@Ricky: I don’t know if it qualifies as racism, hence why I never uttered that word but what I do know is, you’re statement was offensive.
Here’s the way I handle this type of situation, I would’ve said, “I don’t dig Asian men normally, but I can get into him. I dig him.”
See the difference? It’s subtle but there.

@scott ny’er: I think the statement was innocuous. And correct me if I’m wrong, but the “pretty cute for an Asian” comment wasn’t Ricky’s, as I look upthread. ? Michael’s “I’d do him if he was wearing sunglasses” statement is offensive, by contrast. But then again, Michael likes humor of the South Park variety.
I find it hard to believe that gay men aren’t attracted to a guy with a body like this, frankly, but then I suppose that statement could be construed as sexist. :-)

Oh, yeah…the great photographer Bruce Weber would dig this photograph also. I am so glad we are finally talking about Mr. Tang instead of trying to “out-intellectualize” each other. When a non-racist inadvertently offense someone of another race with an insensitive comment, he/she says “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean it that way.” A racist continues to defend his/her statement while loudly shouting “I’m not a racist!” or accuses those he/she offended as being “PC.” We all know which category Ricky falls into. Also, I’m very proud that I don’t judge people by the color of their skin, so yes, I do like “everyone.” The fact that you make snide comments about that (which I assume is because you think that it’s odd to not judge someone’s worth based on race as you tend to do) further confirms your racist attitude.
· Flag
Hi Reality Check…I really believe this race/racist thing hs been driven into the ground. I think you have been abundantly clear about your beliefs. You’re probably a really nice guy. Jeremy Tang is a model who happens to be Asian. He is a handsome man who definitely worked hard to have that physique. It is 2009 and believe it or not, some people don’t care about the sexuality of others, their race, their income, etc. We live in a day and age that is difficult for most. There are so many people of every race, belief, sexuality and we’re all together in this sometimes crazy world…rich or poor…black or white…we have seen so much unrest politically (AND I DON’T EVEN WANNA GO THERE!) recession, struggles of all kinds. If indeed you are compassionate and really believe that Mr. Tang should not be insulted or ostracized by others’ remarks, good for you! However, ignorance and ignorant people are abundant…but he’s not alone. Americans tend to dislike many kinds of people. So what! It takes people like you and me and other people to remain steadfast in respecting everyone…BUT I THOUGHT THIS SITE WAS ABOUT THE MODEL…Please sway the conversation away from ancient history or racism or anything that resembles negativity…this model seems like a cool dude. I’ll bet you and most of the guys on this comment site are also cool. Smart, too. Thanks to you and Mr. Tang, too. Again, a very cool photo. Can ‘ya dig it?

This guy is cute and hot. I would ride that ass all night long. You go, Mr. Tang. Having been fortunate to have lived across the entire country I have ran into assholes from every race and corner of the globe.
I have also been fortunate to have met and love (not just sexually either) a lot of people from different cultures and races too. Some of you sound like computer monitors for southern chapters of the KKK typing while looking over your shoulder to be sure not to get caught on a gay site.
Others are clearly at work while posting. I do hope you remember to delete you browsing history. The economy is tough and imagine getting yourself fired over your silly racist beliefs. Enough already.

Don’t forget, the MAJORITY of Americans hate us enough and want us to either die off, leave the country, be put in concentration camps or “convert” as heterosexuals without all this backstabbing and infighting. The rightwing nut jobs don’t need to do anything, we will just kill each other off instead.

Hi Ricky…that dude from “Twilight” Rob Pattinson does it for me. Talk about perfection…I can’t think of anyone else right now. But you’re right…Pattinson’s got it going on, as you say. Hey, Liddy…although you seem kind of…well…aggressive…I think you’re right about gay dudes being nasty with each other. Never understood all the cattiness and drama…then gay men expect to be cool with their straight associates. Just because you dig guys doesn’t mean you have to be vicious. Look at some of the out and out viciousness on this site. Unbelievable. Okay, Ricky, name just two dudes we all know to get a perspective on who you dig. Just for fun. Remember FUN?

Hm…I’ve read through all the comments, and I must confess I don’t really understand all the venom being directed toward Ricky.
I’ll probably draw some fire for saying it, but I, too, am not typically sexually attracted to Asian men. I don’t think they’re inferior or ugly, it’s just my own personal tastes. I’m usually attracted to people who look like me, which I think is a normal human response. That’s not to say I’m closed to the idea of dating outside my race, though. If it happens it happens. You never know whom you might encounter and fall in love with.
But…TYPICALLY, I’m not drawn towards men outside my race. I don’t think that makes me a racist…I have friends of every color and creed…it’s just the normal sexual response I have seems to be focused on men of my particular ethnicity. Occasionally, though, you see someone like Mr. Tang, who just (for whatever reason) breaks that usual trend and “does it for you”. I think that’s all Ricky was saying.
· Flag
@drresol: Lord o lord did any of you ignoramuses ever stop to think that this photo shoot does not have a gosh-darn-thing to do with “your” personal preferences?
What many of these comments point to is how shallow and self serving gays in america are. Think for a minute, if you were to summarize all of the negative comments posted, does this summation sound right: If a person does not have 6 pac abs, buns of steel, have hair (or traces of it) around his a-hole and non-white I am not interested. Does that sound about right? Is that what you are saying? Because it sure as hell sounds like it.
I have spent the last 10 years or so watching helplessly one the sidelines as selfish, self serving idiots and groups are now the “spokesgirls” for the entire community because this is clearly the mentality of the community. We, the new self srving leaders of the community have decided to say to hell with those who have health problems that are in each states’ cross hairs to be cut, we are going to raise hell because the entire world is more or less against us walking down the aisle in a white wedding dress knowing full well we have our penis’ still attached and screwed any and all who entered the bathhouses and circuit parties.
No, no. We demand our rights and we are going to need the help of all gay men and women until it passes. Afterwards, we will go right back to having our new agendas led by white queens who think the same way many of the posters who commented here do.
What is being shown here in these comments is the true side of many who are on that Human Rights campaign and back the ga marriage B/S.

Yay, Dresol! I think that’s all he was saying, too! Le’s face it-you like who you like-and that’s it. I think people in general(both straight and gay) “judge a book by its cover”. And that’s kind of sad, really. Let’s say you met someone of another ethnicity-or whatever-and you suddenly found yourself having really special feelings for that person-would you deny those feelings? Probably not. But you initially look for what you re normally drawn to. That’s the cool part of life-its unpredictability. It would be a sad world if we were all the same and liked the same things, wouldn’t it? Oh, yeah…Hi, Mr. Tang!
· Flag
Ricky, have you thought about WHY you so swiftly rule out 60% of the world’s population as unattractive? Maybe if you start going a bit under the surface and investigate the origins of your prejudices (yes, literally you are “pre-judging”) you will come to recognize them as a problem instead of just another matter-of-fact. It seems like you don’t have the emotional depth and introspective honesty to grasp the difference between saying “I like whites but not Asians” and saying “I like apples but not pears.”

Please read comment #65…Ricky says he thinks Jeremy Tang, the featured model, is hot. I really do not think he is anti-Asian. Each one of us has personal preferences…I just think Ricky did not expect the torrent of backlash from FELLOW gay men. Fellow gay men. This implies some type of unity. What if he said he wasn’t turned on by blonde guys? You wouldn’t see all of these comments condemning him. The over-eagerness to condemn him is because it SEEMS LIKE he was speaking out in a racist tone. Let’s keep this guy’s spoken opinion in perspective. HE EVEN STATED MR. TANG WAS HOT! We’re all presumably gay and we know how some “other people” feel about us. Cut this guy a little slack. He’s one of us. Don’t try to make him the martyr for every slur one has/can endure. Like Mr. Tang…he’s one of us…if he misspoke, forgive him already. So what’s the deal with the hot model, Mr. Tang? Anybody know more about him? That is what this site is about, right? C’mon, guys…let’s move on…let it be.

@Phil: i think you need to read post 17 (@dcstrike: ). Ricky and Alan made their intent pretty clear. It’s their right to have preferences, just as others have the right to take offense and comment. You believe that evaluating people by their hair color is the same as evaluating people by their race. fine. there are many, including me, who don’t see it that way. i can’t stand people who tell me that they don’t usually go for black guys, but think that I’m hot. i think it’s sad that people go through life thinking that it’s okay.

In life, you will always be met with compliments and slurs…there are many people who are all too ready to insult. @Alec: You’re correct. I was replying to Ricky’s reply and didn’t realize he didn’t make that statement. It seemed like he did in his reply. So, yes, I guess my reply or being offended is more directed towards Michael and comments like his.
I think Ricky is getting flack because he seems like he’s defending Michael-like type of comments.
Again, for me, I get that peeps are attracted to different things but the context one frames such attraction is the issue.

@Phil: thanks for the advice, but i know full well that i will be met with compliments and slurs. Some of those “compliments and slurs” are due to the color of my skin. you’re right, i cannot control what people say to me, but decided a long time ago not to let comments like Alan’s pass.
It’s not about “hurt feelings.” It’s about letting people know when they’re being offensive or prejudicial. That may not be your choice, but don’t condescend to tell me how I should respond.

such a handsome and energetic young man – so full of appeal, magic – he will go far – he knows how to deal with the camera – indeed his affinity for the camera is as great as DIETRICH – I predict a great future for him and I have thought about him almost every day since I first came across his images about 15 months ago – and he does it all out of sheer belief in his own destiny, his own star – his face, to be honest, is not beautiful, but his sheer will, his ambition, his lust, insatitable appetite for applause – the German word EHRGEIZ is usually translated ‘ambition’ but a literal translation is ‘honor greed’ – and this is what we see written on his face and in every movement of his body: he compels attention, devotion, worship – like a commanding icon – he is not cruel or punishing, but he is demanding, possibly ‘a jealous god’ – no offense intended – and it is possible that if you worhip at his temple, you must swear absolute devotion, loyalty – he seems to be commanding that in his eyes, and he certainly get that kind of zealous loyalty from photographers

I’ve never been one for asian men, but after these my mind has been changed. This guy is beautiful. LOVE LOVE LOVE his skin. Makes me want to just caress him for hours.
