PHOTOS: With all the fighting we’ve had to do for our rights, it can be easy to forget that sometimes it’s just about love. On March 30, Navy Senior Chief Dwayne D. Beebe married Jonathan Franqui in a beautiful ceremony at Old Christ Church in Pensacola, Florida. The two met in 2011 and actually got engaged at the San Diego Pride Parade, the first time gay and lesbian service members were allowed to march in uniform.
“My wish was that I wanted to start a family so that my own family could be proud of me,” Jonathan said during his vows. “After I met Dwayne and introduced him to my family, my dad and mom opened up a little more and saw that we were truly in love.”

I guess I’m gonna be the bitter one today.
This is obviously gorgeous and wonderful and rainbows and unicorns. I’m not denying any of that. But I don’t like this:
“My wish was that I wanted to start a family so that my own family could be proud of me.”
What is that saying? That the only way to make your family proud is to have a family of your own? That his family wouldn’t be proud of him if he couldn’t have children? That having a family is the only worthwhile thing in life?
It’s fine if he wants to have a family – if that’s what he wants he should have it. But no-one should create a family only because they think it would make someone else happy, or imply that one cannot be proud of a person if they don’t have a family.
