PARTY HAUS

Stars of Broadway and Indiewood were out in full force last night at the premiere party for Ira Sachs’ film Keep The Lights On, which had its New York debut at the Tribeca Film Festival this week. The indie drama follows a gay couple’s relationship over 10 years and is based loosly on the real-life ups and downs of director Ira Sachs (above with Lights star Zach Booth) and book agent Bill Clegg.

In the basement bar of Chelsea’s American Hotel, Booth (previously seen as Glenn Close’s son on Damages) told Queerty about the challenges of his role, including some rather raw sexual scenes: “I had a lot of faith in Ira so we just did it. The harder part actually was the drug use [in the film]. I was emotionally hung over from all of that.”

We also got to chat with the director himself about the racy nature of the film, which he doesn’t consider that unusual.  “There was a time when sex and sexuality wasn’t foreign in movies and I think we forget that,” said Sachs. “I was trying to do something honest to my experience and my experience includes sex.” We also talked with Sachs about the reaction he’s been getting from audiences, he told us  “I often have other gay men my age coming up to me and saying that I’ve told their story. And that’s been very exciting.”

In addition to other actors from the movie—like Sebastian La Cause, Justin Reinsilber and Miguel del Toro—there were well-known actors from stage and screen on hand too: Filmmaker John Cameron Mitchell, Andrew Rannells (The Book of Mormon), Bobby Steggert (Ragtime), Mike Doyle (CBS’s A Gifted Man) and Jeff Hiller (30 Rock).

Sachs’ film will be hitting the festival circuit this spring and summer and arriving in theaters in the fall.
