I agree with comment no#5…..Chastity always seemed sad..even as a child when Sonny & Cher brought out out on numerous occassions durin thier Variety show…..if u look at old clips..almost all of them..she’s not smiling at all..and almost grimaces…and for such a cute little girl,you can notice….as a gay man..I do not pretend to understand transgendered people…but,hey whatever makes someone happy..then im all for it…best of luck Chaz.

While I don’t think I’m saying anything as brutal as @DuttyBarb‘s comment, I can’t help but to be a little skeptical in this situation. Certainly not because I doubt the legitimacy of transsexualism, but because I question whether Chaz/Chastity is legitimately transsexual.
Let’s face it, she’s the child of Sonny & Cher, for chrisakes. We’ve seen plenty of people who’ve grown up as children of celebrities, and it’s fucked them up big time. I can’t help but wonder if this is little more than a cry for attention and/or help.
He wouldn’t be doing himself, nor the transgender community, any favors if he’s simply doing this for the sake of a little press (or because he’s a spoiled Hollywood brat with mommy issues).
I sincerely hope my doubts are unfounded. I also hope that Chaz is making the right decision for himself, for the right reasons.

Would it be possible for an LGBT site to attempt to be sensitive about trans issues?
Chaz isn’t their “soon-to-be son.” His gender (male) has nothing to do with the surgery that he may or may not have. Let’s not assume that all transgender people get surgery, and let’s certainly not disrespect their identity before they get that surgery.

@Jen: I really think that most of what you are reading is more critical of this situation than this scenario. I saw a few episodes of that celebrity fat-camp thing, and while I wouldn’t subject a stranger whom I have never met to my diagnostic skills… the dreaded “B word” came into my mind with (then) Chastity. (b word being borderline, not bitch… lately my attempts at language jokes have gotten me skewered here). So I don’t think this is being seen as a Trans issue as much as it is being seen as a celebrity and media whore issue.

I remember that she called Ellen’s show “Too Gay”. I wonder if that had something to do with her not really feeling gay herself but feeling more like a straight man trapped in a woman’s body. Who knows.
hopefully things go well for her. She has never seemed overly comfortable with herself or happy. hopefully this will help.

@Nickadoo – unless things have changed since about a year ago when I last ogled the laws on this, you’re still required to do the whole gender therapist thing for a while, and possibly live as a male for some amount of time, before you’re allowed to do hormone therapy or that sort of thing. Wiki is encouraging this assumption.

So he’s at least unlikely to F his body up permanently if he’s unsure. For some reason I can’t find any reason at all to doubt him, though. I really haven’t heard much in the press about him other than the original “he would prefer to be referred to as a he. Kthxbyetyvm.”, but then again, I don’t follow non-political news very well.
Also, BTW at above posters, especially @Cam who is /not/ speaking in the past tense or commenting on the legitimacy of this — if someone says they’re male, that generally means they prefer to be referred to as “he”, not “she”. Getting pronouns mixed up too bad to someone’s face is likely to start a mean argument or two.
I just wish him luck with all this crap and hope people stop stalking him at clinics, Lol.
