Queerty is better as a member
I think this is amazing. And I also think that 1-in-10 is astonishingly low. As a happy and secure gay guy, I think I’d still have to say that I certainly wouldn’t hope for a gay child, and if I’m honest with myself would probably consider a kid better off to be straight, though fortunately gay kids born now will face relatively fewer and less severe hurdles than has ever been the case before.
I think there’s a tendency among libs to assume that Latinos as a group are less-educated (and they are also predominantly Catholic), and therefore probably not gay-friendly as a voting block. This is a very pleasant wake-up call.
And thanks for your support, Latino folks!
And while marriage-equality groups are dashing out press releases about the results, another aspect of the poll—taken by only 400 participants—is quite distressing: Asked what their biggest disappointment would be when it comes to their children, one in ten said having a gay child.”
1. It isn’t that distressing when you think that gay marriage is relatively new and that most in the poll have probably never met a married gay couple.
2. There were plenty of people black, white, asian, or latino, years ago who supported the ended of the ban on interacial marriage who wouldn’t have wanted their kid to marry somebody of another race.
I wish they’d asked for reasons. After all, there are reasons other than thinking there’s something *wrong* with being gay for wanting your kids to turn out straight. For example, if you’re hoping for lots of grandchildren, gay children cuts down your chances there. So that could be a big disappointment without thinking any less of them for it. And while it wouldn’t be *disappointing* per se, fitting in with the more general description the headline gives, in a world where gay people are at a disadvantage it makes sense to hope for straight kids, just so their lives will be easier.
Latinos are generally younger than the average American so that might explain it.
