Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Heterosexual are sexual orientations.
Transgender and Intersex are gender identities.
An effeminate man or butch woman are a type of gender expression, so gender identity/expression is apart of gender as a whole.

Homophobic or ignorant people will say that sexual orientation is not a protected class-status.

You can change and control sexual behavior. But no person can not change or control sexual orientation. LGBT people are a protected class because they have been historically discriminated against on the basis of their sexual orientation and are powerless against the political structure in American society.

…And……this is probably going to be part of Prop 8′s arguments as to why we should be barred from “civil marriage” and not a ‘suspect class’, because we can “change” (ie. be celibate) if we really try hard enough, meaning that we are not (to them) endowed with immutable characteristics!
