Yale has hosted porn stars before, including transgender performer Buck Angel.

To be fair, Sean has renounced his bareback past. While his past shouldn’t be whitewashed, he should also be given a second chance.
This is the difference between, say, Cobra and TIM. Cobra hires horny young boys who know no better and convinces them with offers of money and fame to make unsafe porn without making sure they fully understand the consequences. The blame lies with the studio, not the performers. Whereas TIM’s performers are grown men in full knowledge of their actions, and therefore deserve no benefit of the doubt, nor pity when (not if) they catch HIV.

Anyone who is shocked by the choices of Yale’s gay student body should sit back and look at the resumes of the HRC board. Try doing that and no longer will you wonder why they are as distant from the gay community at large as they are.
That entire board is made up of ivy leaguers who have no idea (no care) as to how they are seen by the working class masses of the gay community.

Of curse we all watch porn and many of us watch bareback porn; but that is not the issue. Certainly if one is attending a White Party or a Sexpo, sure this kid fits right in. But this is a pride event held at a university; certainly there are superior role-model gay/lesbian youth to offer words of wisdom, Johnny Weir or Matthew Mitcham (Australia’s gay olympic diving gold medalist) to name a couple.

Brent has been an outspoken advocate for safer sex practices as a RESULT of his earlier experiences and I think young people respond better to people to whom they feel they can relate and who are not these perfect, “I’ve never made a mistake and just do as I say” type of folks.
We all know that having unprotected sex can spread NOT JUST HIV but a whole host of STDS.
But that doesn’t mean that every couple that decides to have unprotected sex within the confines of their relationship is opening themselves up to an STD any more than every straight couple that decides to have unprotected sex in order to conceive a child is doing so.
Just like with a straight couple planning to having unprotected sex to conceive a child, gay men need to get tested, assess their risk and decide within their relationship what they want to do.
Anyone outside of that relationship can demand that a condom be used if they are having sex with one of those men but one thing has no direct effect on the other.
If YOU personally always use a condom then YOU are not putting yourself or the person you’re with at risk. That’s what we should all be focused on. That’s what will actually stop the spread of STDs
But perpetuating this idea that any time two men have sex with each other, they are already and always at risk of contracting an STD is just inflammatory nonsense. You can only spread an STD if you IN FACT have an STD and you can only catch an STD if you are having unprotected sex with someone who has one.
The fact that everyone should be encouraged to use condoms (even lesbians sharing toys) as much as possible doesn’t change the fact that just being a gay man who is sexually active doesn’t make you a “spreader of disease”.
40 year old MD’s (no matter how brilliant or esteemed) coming to talk to gay college kids about safer sex practices (and porn or whatever else Brent has experience to talk about) doesn’t have the same impact.
Unless you are some kind of Victorian prude, I can’t imagine why you’d think the mere fact that someone has done porn or is doing porn professionally makes them mentally incompetent or unable to speak to kids about something as relevant as this issue is to his life and to their interests.
It’s just sex, it doesn’t rob you of brain cells or make you immoral or unintelligent.
There is something so self-hating about the way men who have sex with other men for a living are denigrated and maligned so easily but gay men (often the same men who support the porn industry as customers).
It’s almost heterosexist in the way it is so similar to the way straight men think about and talk about female porn stars and sex workers because often the porn stars who are the most denigrated are professional “bottoms” and that somehow makes them the “bitch”
Anyway, my point is, I think it was a shame that Brent was dis-invited. I’ve listened to him speak and while he is young he’s smart and speaks to young folks intelligently and in a way then can access. He’s honest about his past and has no shame but also can talk about the lessons he’s learned (and given how many young gays WANT to do porn, who better to talk to them about it).
It’s not ABOUT we in our 30s and 40s would respond to speaking at a gay pride celebration.
It’s about who those kids wanted to have come speak to THEM.
I don’t get the judgment about porn. Everyone has sex, all kinds of sex, how does it make you less intelligent if you get paid to do it?
I also think that Brent’s mistakes were made when he was VERY young and seemed in part due to the fact that he had no responsible adults to whom he could relate or trust to guide him away from participating in sex acts that MIGHT HAVE BEEN dangerous to his health.
At any rate, I wish that folks could think about things from a perspective that isn’t inflammatory and hysterical and maybe different than their own.
I’ve done sex education with queer youth in NYC since 1999 and I think they’d get a HELL OF A LOT MORE from the smart, candid, honest advice from someone like Brent then from a lot of the kinds of people the University would be inclined to invite to pride on campus.
