Portia DeGeneres: ‘It Is A Gradual Thing’ Where a ‘Diet Becomes A Disorder’

My goodness. That preview clip of Portia DeGeneres on Oprah today did not prepare me for what was actually to come, with Oprah reading aloud passages from the actress’ new book Unbearable Likeness about how she promised herself to get down to 150 calories a day, and would try to count how many calories she burned by crying during her depression.

Portia went on her first diet at age 12, and as an adult actress trained herself to just think keeping the weight off was part of her professional approach to Hollywood: Anorexia meant she kept getting jobs, and kept fitting into her wardrobe, and that was –in her head–a good thing.
