Problematizing Lawrence King

The Lawrence King murder raises more questions this morning. Time‘s John Cloud wonders whether gay groups like the Task Force should be politicizing the 15-year old’s shooting death. Do we highlight his homosexuality as the alleged motive behind last weeks bloodshed. Cloud says “no,” and points to evidence that suggests gay kids aren’t as endangered as some would believe. He concludes, We may never know the real motivations for King’s murder. …But [Brandon McInerney's] victim’s heartbreaking life and death should be occasions for mourning, not legislation.” [Time]

Hmm, I’d say Cloud’s logic is wrong. Considering this kid’s history, one should assume that his sexual identity was the efficient cause of his murder unless proved otherwise, not the other way around.

John Cloud is the douchebag who wrote the Time’s puff piece about Ann Coulter:

Defended Coulter’s use of an anti-gay slur towards John Edwards:

He also opposes hate crime legislation:

“…unless you are (as I am) opposed to the whole enterprise of criminalizing people’s thoughts.”

Uses stats to claim LGBTQ kids have it easier than straight kids and wrote an article essentially claiming that the Point Foundation–who offer scholarships to LGBTQ youth–pay gay kids to tell horror stories:

The saddest part of all this? He’s gay:

“I do have a partner. We have been together for seven years. I feel fine about my sexuality. Yes, some days I am extremely happy–like the days when my stories run on the cover. I can’t say that I have been ‘extremely lonely’ since I was in the closet. Thanks for writing.”

He’s one of those homosexuals who beleives we can onyl advance if we suck up to straight people and take whatever they give us.

If you feel like throwing up a little in your mouth, read more of his garbage:

Legislation is desperately needed. Anything that can prompt legislators to move protections and equality forward ought to be employed. What should we tell them – to take a step back and not proceed?

I’m sorry to resort to name calling, but John Cloud is a horse’s as*!

Why can’t this poor child’s murder by another child be both an occassion for mourning, but also self-examination and remedy, including legislation? How’d he get the gun anyway?

I guess Time is going for the U.S. News & World Reports’ audience.

Legislation may be needed but it wouldn’t have stopped this. Schools have policies about bullying and sexual harassment after all.
