The latest attempt by Mark Leno to subvert the clear mandate of We The People will never fly.

Otherwise CA would have to allow Saudi princes to have their polygamous marriages recognised too.

If I understood correctly, this would also allow couples who got married in other jurisdictions BEFORE November 5th to have the actual full marriages recognized in California, just like the Cali couples who were married before November 5th. The Strauss v. Horton decision did not specifically address Prop. 8's effect on out-of-state marriages entered into before November 5th. You can definitely expect to see some lawsuits by the bigot crowd over that one (they will lose, but it will be there).

@tavdy79: Civil unions granted in jurisdictions outside California - e.g. New Jersey - are recognized as DP in California. Conversely, DP's entered into in California are recognized as the equivalent institution (civil partnerships/domestic partnerships, etc) in many jurisdictions outside California, e.g. Switzerland.

The reporting on this is terrible. What it amounts to:

California 'mos can register their relationship as Domestic Partnership, getting all - actually most - of the state-granted rights, responsibilities that non-'mos can get by getting "Married".

The legislation, in essence, would treat a legal marriage granted to 'mos in a jurisdiction other than California as a DP under California law.

What if you got a civil union/civil partnership/registered partnership (etcetera ad infinitum) in a country where that status is virtually indistinguishable from marriage?
