Not true. Ontario only recognizes that the still married person has PARENTAL obligations. They do not recognize more than one spouse. For example if the still married man claimed to be the spouse of the other women..they would not recognize that in the family property law court. FOr conjugal unions…only two at a time or its polyhgamy. If the man CLAIMED in court to be a spouse they would need to charge him with polygamy. If the second woman claimed she was not his spouse..then she would npot be charged with polygamy.

In Ontario Canada you cannot have three spouses at the same time. Otherwise it is Ontario Polygamy charge in waiting.
You can have one spouse at a time. One must get divorced to have another same-time spouse. After the fact of divorce, there can be subsequent spouses. After time, there can be one or no spouse..but there can be ex-spouses, hense the confusion. Saskatchewan is the only Canadian province that allows polygamy.

Strumpetwindsock, thank you for the link. Even if the law against polygamy is upheld, I wonder how this will impact those muslims who subscribe to polygamy citing freedom of religion, practice and belief. Polygamy in the islammic cult is accepted and practiced.

Attmay, they can’t pin polygamy on us when you take into account that the Mormon cult once practiced it, hardly the fault of gay people. They used old testament references to justify it. Odd how most right wing religious bigots claim they believe in the scripture but conveniently omit many references that are contrary to 21st century living and the laws that govern us, while deliberately using the Leviticus reference to justify discrimination. Regarding the story about polygamy in Canada, part of the issue is that it’s already possible to have more than one spouse in Canada depending on your province’s definition of “spouse”.

In Ontario, it’s possible to have _three_ legally recognised spouses at once: One through marriage, one through long-term cohabitation, and one through having a child together while in a relationship “of some permanance”. (e.g. A man leaves his wife but doesn’t divorce her, then moves in with a girlfriend, and knocks up another girlfriend on the side. All three women fit Ontario’s definition of “spouse”.)

I’m skeptical about the Puerto Rico story. That’s not a reliable source that’s being cited, and there might be a misunderstanding if the police statement is being translated from Spanish. For example, perhaps the statement was closer to: “Because there’s a killer on the loose, the gay community needs to be warned to be careful right now. This could happen to them.”

I could understand a single cop saying something homophobic extemporaneously, but this was a prepared statement. If a prepared statement from the police department was really that homophobic, you’d think it would be a bigger story.
