McG and Kramer, Sitting in NYC
P-R-O-T-E-S-T-I-N-G (?)

actproK.jpg
Larry Kramer (pictured, looking like he's ready to rumble) led the New ACT-UP "army" to Times Square today to call for General Peter Pace's not-so-nice remarks on the gays and the ever-contentious "Don't Ask, Don't Tell".

Among this paltry army (a shameful 60-person strong, although, maybe the fags have day jobs and couldn't get out to join the socially conscious fun), one can see former NJ Governor Jim McGreevey (below):

Now, we don't want to be naysayers or anything, but doesn't it seem as if McGreevey's just there for the photo-op? He's not even pretending to protest. He's just standing there with his coffee, chatting up that dude. Publicity aside, Towleroad correspondent Dave G. (The "AY" is silent) has snapped one of the most captivating shots we've seen in the last hour. That stoic man's definitely fantastic. For reals.

For more pictures of the protest, go pay Andy a visit. Tell him Queerty sent you and be sure to wipe your feet. We don't want him thinking we've raised total ragamuffins.

Yeah, McGreevey looks like he's asking for directions to the closest bus station bathroom. Sad that only 60 people showed up. When did we become so complacent--and closeted?

It's not that sad, considering that this action was planned in one day, and the bigwigs in attendance included Kramer, McGreevey, Matt Foreman, Mike Signorile, Michael Musto, and Ann Northrop. Media coverage included NY1, Sirius, WBAI, and a bunch of the big gay blogs.

This action was just meant to get things started for the Queer Justice League. Let's see how the next big, well planned action goes.

McGreevey showed up becaues he's reached that point where he's simply "a celebirty" and hence beyond good and evil (like, say Paris or Anna Nicole). as such, he's a foot soldier, bringing media attention. he's a scumbag in so many ways -- but not this way. Here, he's doing good, Let him alone, fer crissakes!

I'm glad ACT UP reunited - but why on this issue? Do we queer activists really want to be int he army right now? WHy not focus on the youth homelessness epidemic, or here's an idea -- AIDS! Why would ACT UP reunite to focus on a military discrimination issue!?? (especially during a time of war that we were lied into..) I'm warning you all now - military will be the next marriage - and the real issues facing our community as a whole will continue to be overlooked.

Mark Snyder: I've heard that argument before. I'm not crazy about the military or the war either. But until and unless a certain population is given the "privilege" of dying to defend one's country, they'll never be accepted as full members of the polity. Until we ban wars, that's the unfortunate truth of the modern nation state. If you don't like it, fight to end wars - but until then, fight to let us fight in them. Sad truth.

I'm sorry, but I'm with Mark. Where was Larry Kramer and co. when Virginia was making it impossible to be a gay couple in that state? Or is the 500 mile trek to Richmond too far to drive? Gay marriage--or the lack thereof--is still a #1 issue for us queers. So why are so few people doing anything about it?

Here's Larry's recent speech: We Must Not Accept Crumbs

At least we have Larry Kramer around to say what needs to be said. I have no desire to build bridges with people who create whole industries whose sole purpose is to denigrate and dehumanize gay people. While the majority of gay people role their eyes at gay activists or stand on the sidelines bitching about how they would do things differently, a few courageous righteously angry people like Larry Kramer confront the haters and, of course, confront what is truly our biggest obstacle: apathy within the gay communtiy... or should I say apathy within the group of people who are gay but choose not to be part of any sort of positive gay community.

For a small sexual minority, it isn't enough to just come out. We must work together and call out the immorality and irrationality of those who seek to segregate us, vilify us and scapegoat us. Being sensitive to the haters' viewpoint is no different than asking a black person to be sensitive to the viewpoints of racists. Period. End of Discussion.

Faulting the direction of those who lead the charge for full equality under the law for gay people is a poor excuse for doing nothing. Any direction which challenges the status quo and seeks to demonstrate that we, as fully human beings, will not passively stand by as our wholeness as human beings is being debated. Bitching about 'what ifs' while gay youth are being forced into ex-gay indoctrination camps is such a complete waste. Do something.. anything.

At least Larry Kramer is. Are you?
