Former Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien—the P.M. who presided over Canadian Parliament when the nation's provinces began legalizing gay marriage in 2003—states in an interview with Pink News U.K.:
"Nobody objected basically to having a contract between the partners, there was no problem with that. It was when they used the word marriage, that got [to] rubbing people on the wrong side, including me...[but] the courts said you have to call it marriage."
The piece goes on to give a few more fluffy quotes from Chretien before closing with the coda stating that Canada's "Civil Marriage Act" making unions open to same-sex couples also has provisions outilining in no uncertain terms the fact that gay marriage is a contract between the marrying parties and the state—and declares that no religious institution is required to perform a marriage ceremony.
He's such a nice guy.
As a Canadian, I formally apologize. I voted for this man three times. He managed to keep his yap shut during his tenure as PM. I wish he had done the same after. What he doesn't seem to realise, or care about, is that passing ssm marriage is what helped keep his party from blowing the last election completely.
Thank goodness the re-opening of the debate and the final vote closed this discussion once and for all. Now, it seems, it is starting to become a non-issue. I mean, what can the opposition do once it becomes law and shows no signs of turning back? Not much.
Surprisingly, a lot of the most conservative people I know now take on a "live and let live" mentality rather than a "leave marriage for us" stance. It's interesting to see what a simple little vote can do.
